Kinda what I'm thinking about - DP trip
Kinda what I'm thinking about - DP trip
Don't queue the 70's porn music, it's not that kind of DP
When
May 20th through May 26th
Drive 19 and 20 (two day drive with an overnight rest stop). It can be done in one shot from Texas but starting worn out is a bad way to begin.
Probably stay here as the half way point
https://www.google.com/maps/@35.0983557 ... 048,11.98z
21-24 ride and hike - 4 days of this will be an ass beating
25 and 26 drive back
27 unpack and recover before going back to slaving for the man on the 28th
KML Files My site is booked, I'm staying here:
https://www.grandstaircaseresort.com/
Escalante Cabins & RV Park
435-826-4433 (local)
escalantepark.com
680 West Main Street
Escalante, Utah 84726
May 20th through 26th - there are showers/bathrooms/campsites available
I booked R-17
Required:
Full knobbies
GPS - some trails and roads are not marked or marked poorly
From what I can tell all sizes of bikes from 140cc to 1200cc could tackle this area however some sections are sandy, some sections have rocks the size of bowling balls with 2 foot ruts soooo, beater bike would be best.
Water - lots of water, a small camel back will not do
I wouldn't do any type off of pavement riding without a skid plate, it takes surprisingly little to knock holes in the bottoms of engines (there is a video about this if I can find it I'll post it)
Full hiking gear (hiking boots, camel back, GPS etc)
99.99% sure I'll be packing - bear and large cats are in the area
I'm a dual sport newb, follow me at your own risk.
I have some books and maps on order I'll dial in more after they arrive but so far:
What
Routes options:
Sites:
Alstrom Point
Lower Canyon Trail
Smoky Mountain Overlook
153 miles round trip
Full day of riding, expect 8 to 10 hours saddle time, it'll be an ass kicking but completely worth it Left Hand Collet Canyon via 230
Sites:
TBD
Lots of possible side exploration TBD
BLM280 / BLM260 loop
Sites:
Hole in the rock
Dance hall rock
Devils Garden
Batty Pass Caves
131 miles
~6.5 hour saddle time
~12 hour total time Park the bikes, give the ass a rest and do one or two hikes or split the day
Slot Canyons Hike
Zebra Canyon Hike
Where is Marty, he has probably already been there done this a few times

Elaborate as to what you are thinking...KLR, GS, camping....
Chance favors the prepared mind.

That trip looks awesome
The world needs Miles
Sometimes you gotta draw the line, but that doesn't mean it can't be squiggly-miles

Re: Kinda what I'm thinking about
This ride is 13 hours away from me. Let me know if you actually make it happen. I can't do anything like you GS but who knows.
Re: Kinda what I'm thinking about
Get a beater KLR, Daughter just picked one up for $1,500. I'll save the GS for longer rides / touring, this will be riding daily out of a base camp kind of like we did in Arkansas.MVRider wrote:This ride is 13 hours away from me. Re: Kinda what I'm thinking about
I'll convert my 250R into a street legal bike and put a larger tank on it. Looks like so much fun.

I'd be down for this as well! I think I found a KLR and all... just have to go check it out - https://dallas.craigslist.org/ftw/mcy/d ... 63267.html
Any thoughts? Seems like a deal too good to be true, right?
Keep me posted about the trip please!?

Doesn't seam like it's too good to be true, only one way to find out for sure is to go look at it.SputnikSam wrote:I'd be down for this as well! I think I found a KLR and all... just have to go check it out - https://dallas.craigslist.org/ftw/mcy/d ... 63267.html

What would you youngins know of 70's porn music?fixxervi6 wrote:Don't queue the 70's porn music, it's not that kind of DP
I wish! (assuming (1) I'm the Marty you are referring to, and (2) you were not referring to the other type of DP)fixxervi6 wrote: Where is Marty, he has probably already been there done this a few times
I've been to Utah several times, but only one trip so far with Dual Sport bike. I did the White Rim Canyon loop but to be honest your trip looks like a lot more fun. I wish I could go. I hope you guys don't get much (any) sand. My little
short stumpy legs hate sand! Of course maybe if I had more technique they might feel different about it. I recommend a kidney belt, Fox makes a reasonably priced one (several actually). Don't forget extra tubes and tire irons.
I'm assuming you're trailering out there?
Looks like some good routes!

70's porn music was a big enough hit that even us youngins know about it , and yes your the Marty I was referring to.fartymarty wrote:What would you youngins know of 70's porn music?fixxervi6 wrote:Don't queue the 70's porn music, it's not that kind of DP

Trailer out, stay in escalate and hit the routes, I just built two more routes last night, I figure if we have a grab bag of routes to choose from we can decide based on weather and how tired we are. I'm trying to avoid the roads that are marked as sandy, there are several potential routes I put the axe on due to sand.
Why can't you go?

Re: Kinda what I'm thinking about - DP trip
Several reasons.fixxervi6 wrote: Why can't you go?
I'm an officer (not an important one, just a worker bee) in the Concours Owner's Group and we are having the National Rally in Kerrville this year in June (it'll be frigin hot) so I'll be busy with that until it's over;
I also am the host for the COG Wildflower Rally in April;
Got some other trips lined up later in the year including a short cruise (unfortunately it's not bike related);
My mother isn't doing too good and I'm never sure when I might have to take off for Chicago either to help my brothers with her or to make final arrangements;
Since the Mrs. doesn't like to travel and doesn't bitch when I go on several trips each year and put the honey do's (SP? doos?) on hold, I need to be careful not to push things too far both financially and time wise.
Still, I'm subscribed, not only because it's interesting but also in case things change.
I remember... (Caution!: old guy telling story you've probably heard before and more than once)... my B-I-L and I taking a rest after battling some sand on the White Rim trail and feeling fairly full ourselves as big time dual sport riders, when a guy and a girl come by us on their mountain bikes seemingly pedaling without effort and giving us a casual greeting as they went by and were soon out of sight. There was suddenly no wind in our sails and we just looked at each other red faced and climbed back on our bikes and continued on. To this day we are so happy that they were going in the opposite direction.

I plan on wearing body armor under regular cloths so I can layer up to adjust easily for temperature, if it turns out to be really nice I'll just throw the armor on over top of a t-shirt

Re: Kinda what I'm thinking about - DP trip
ADV helmet boots ordered, body armor ordered (I won't be doing this in traditional street gear but it can be done) hard luggage ordered for the KLR
For Com's I'm using SCALA pactalk now, if people going want to borrow a unit let me know in advance, you'll have to have your own base.
