Kinda what I'm thinking about - DP trip
Re: Kinda what I'm thinking about - DP trip
I'm using the clip mount and boom mic on this helmet, more room up front with no skirt, and boom mics tend to perform better based on previous experiences

Also, stuff is filling up fast so if your even thinking about going - book now, most you'll lose is your deposit if you wait too long to cancel.

I did! Took all day, just got back! Taking it to metric garage in the morning for a check up. Guy threw in a pirelli mt21 rallycross tire as well. So I'm thinking about mounting that on.JeffStrom wrote:Sam, you ever get that KLR?
Getting a little crowded in the garage.

Are you building the routes for Tom Tom, Garmin, or something else?

I'm thinking about picking up this homemade trailer for $325. Supposedly has lights wiring that I could plug into my existing uhaul module and ramps for motorcycle...Anything else I should be aware of before I buy this?

Homemade? Make sure it has a valid title and current registration.

Ok, per https://www.txdmv.gov/motorists/buying- ... e/trailers for homemade trailers - Used trailer less than or equal to 4,000 lbs. gross weight: Bill of Sale + Registration Receipt. The way I'm reading it, if it's under 4,000 lbs, it doesn't need a title? Just registration, right?

Re: Kinda what I'm thinking about - DP trip
I have a trailer that will haul 3 bikes no problem, I won't be using it for this trip so Sam/Jeff if you want to use it it's available.
I'm going to go get my camper this weekend and start packing
If yall got room I can toss in an Easy up, tables, a stove and grill, I'll be bringing the club cooler too and I have TONS of camping chairs we can bring, i figure we can stake out at your camp site with the tables and such, I have a gas lantern and all that too so I just need to know what all we want to take out of the general bucket.

I'll have room in the truck for stuff, we can pre-load when I get the trailer if that's easier. Sam lives North so he'll be on the way out of town. How early are you thinking Saturday?

Re: Kinda what I'm thinking about - DP trip
So I took the KLR out to Rocky Ridge Ranch this morning to get used to it a bit. The first guy I followed was a seasoned rider and took me through "easy" stuff by his measure. Apparently, he didn't hear me telling him that I've never ridden dirt bikes before, much less a KLR, so the route was pretty technical and rocky. I dumped the bike a few times, lucky didn't get hurt...But my confidence was shot, especially since the guy said the route was very much like what we'll see in Utah. I almost picked up the phone and called Rick and Jeff to say that I'm out of the trip, but I didn't have any signal.
The first time I dumped it, I couldn't pick up the bike by myself, it was on an incline, up against a tree...needed help. Second time I muscled it up myself, and managed to make it up hill and back to camp, hands shaking. Took a breather and ate some hot dogs.
Followed another guy around the easier routes and found my balance on the bike. Learned to go down and up hills, how to stand up on the pegs, and made progress on cornering. Afterwards, I tried a couple of dirt bikes, and did pretty well. They're so much lighter and easier to handle... imagine that.
I think I'll be ok, but man... it's a lot different than street riding that for sure. I think I could do great on gravel and level ground, but I will struggle with climbing and large rocks.
I don't want to that guy to hold everyone up. Am I getting in over my head on this trip?

Re: Kinda what I'm thinking about - DP trip
There is some hard core technical stuff in Utah for sure - we won't be doing any of that. I'm picking routes that from what I can gather are GS size friendly, if we hit serious shit we turn around, I'll post the KML files in a bit and you can check them out for yourself. I take my KX's to the dirt parks around here but no way in hell I'd take a KLR - a dirt bike is a dirt bike and a dual purpose is a dual purpose, different tool for different jobs.SputnikSam wrote:So I took the KLR out to Rocky Ridge Ranch this morning to get used to it a bit. You won't be holding anyone up, I'm still injured and I don't feel like eating it in the middle of nowhere.
edit - no way in HELL i'd take a KLR up that stuff you posted in that pic.
Not too early, I'm going to split the trip up into two days so that on the first day of riding I start out well rested, I'm converting the files to KML now, I"ll start looking at the route up later tonight or tomorrow but I'm going to just hit a hotel on the way upJeffStrom wrote:I'll have room in the truck for stuff, we can pre-load when I get the trailer if that's easier.
