Re: End of an era

Yamaha's decision may have been influenced by the price tag to comply with increasing regulation, especially in Europe, and the competition from others who are delivering street-able sport bikes at a better price point. It looks like Aprilia has taken Matt's advice to heart. The new Aprilia 660 appe...

Re: Falling Jeep Zone

Yeah. Remember to look up when you are driving in that type of country. When I lived out west many years ago, it was common to see good size rocks fall after being displaced by vehicles above.

Re: GMRS comms

I'll be interested in voice quality, vox response, and range when you do get to testing it. I think it has great potential.

Set the beads on a tire in the field

I witnessed a method of setting the beads on a tire I had not seen before. Getting the bead set with a hand pump can be a lot of effort and may require strapping the circumference of the tire. I saw a man set the beads using a flammable spray cleaner. He sprayed it into the tire and then lit it and ...

So, is it more expensive being a Jeep guy than a MC guy? I'm thinking back when you had like 8 bikes.

Re: GMRS comms

I think we talked about finding a solution that used regular radio for group comms a while back. But I was not aware of any MC headsets that did it at the time. The down side will be more static and distortion as the non-digital signal won't have the ability to do error correction. The up side is th...

Re: Most recent purchase thread!

Two questions...
Did you get the B model?
Are you going to tow the jeep to Utah with it?
Ok three questions...

Wait, what now? I'm pretty sure those are even worse in the sand than your KLR. Unless you bought it for the engine and you are making a sand rail.

Re: Grand staircase

Yea I was serious about it, to keep riders connected with me in the jeep, the pace won't match - from experience. I was thinking just simplex for that purpose. Basically it would be like ok we are headed to X location on Y route and bikes would take off and jeep would slog behind slowly, comms woul...

Re: Grand staircase

Rick, if you are serious about using HAM radio, there aren't any sites in the monument, but across the river to the south there is a UHF repeater on Navajo mountain that should provide broad coverage for the entire area, as long as you have a view to the south horizon. Don't know if it would at all ...

Re: Grand staircase

I'm out. I wasn't a high probability anyway because of the schedule, but starting the 11th likely removes any possibility. Sam and I hit hole in the rock and Batty Pass last time. On the bench above (west) the caves sounds like a great place to camp. I think the bottom 10 miles or so of hole in the ...

MSRC 7/19 1.7 CW

Sunday I had my first day at Cresson on the 1.7 track going clockwise. I spent the entire day just trying to get the line right. I wasn't pushing entry speed and was only passing on the exits and in the straights. There are a couple of corners that gave me that "oh shit" feeling several ti...
