Check engine

Post by milesmiles » Wed Jul 06, 2011 6:04 pm

Was taking the bike out today for a hard ride through the country. Thirty mins to get to the road i wanted it and as get down on the bike really hard i see my check engine light has come on. I checked everything out. Runs strong, sounds good, feels great, not over heating.... I'm thinking it's the exup valve(butterfly valve) stuck as most do. So i'm fine with the light being on as for now, because i don't really have the money to put into this thing again. What do y'all think?

You need TunECU and an OBDII cable. The program is free and the cable is under $30 shipped.

A bike shop might look at and reset the code for you free of charge. Pep Boys does for cars anyway.

Call Boris at RPM and explain the situation. Knowing him, he's gonna take care of it for cheap.

If it is the butterfly valve, unless you are worried about emissions, you can just yank it. When my butterfly valve servo stripped teeth on the Gixxer, it was a FI light that came on, not check engine. Removing the servo was a pretty quick and simple fix. The valves are spring set to stay full open when tension is removed from the cable, so you just have to yank the servo out, then find a guide online that will tell you what cables / pins in the harness (mine was near the ECU) to cut / tape off. FI light no longer came on after that.

Again, this was on my Gixxer, may not be the same problem... and if you do check out the error code and determine that's what the problem is, I'd be happy to share my garage and tools and help you do the work. I don't have a way to pull codes though. My issue was obvious... everytime I turned on the bike you could hear the servo in the tail clicking and grinding gears. When I took it apart, half of the nylon teeth were missing from the sprocket inside.

Check all your fluids and make sure everything is good there. Call and see if someone will pull the codes for you. If it is a seized exup valve, see here.

well the light goes out and then comes back on after a few times, so that makes me think even more that it is the exup valve sticking open for a second and then closing...then i drive it around and it resets the error until the next time it happens. WHen i change my oil, i'm going to do some maintenence on the valve with that link you sent

Well mine is starting to have some issues. It's setting multiple times when I turn the bike on. So I'll be doing that very soon to my bike. I'll be doing it tomorrow evening if I can get to it. Otherwise it will be next week. If you like, your welcome to come down and we can hit the exup on both our bikes at the same time.

Plust that will give me a chance to steal parts off your bike. hahaha
