Tread depth

Post by El Diabro » Mon Sep 19, 2011 11:01 am

so with the trackday coming up in 12 days, how do I know if my tires have enough life in them? Does the penny and Lincoln head thing qualify? RS says tires must have 50% tread life remaining but how do you measure that? This time I know the wear bars are not safe :) They are well above that as of right now, so I'm not worried, just don't want to be caught off guard at the last second of needeing new tires.

Financially, if I need new tires, I can try and get them the day before on September 30th, I just don't know that I will be able to get off work in time to have them mounted and balanced.....advice???

If the wear bars are still pretty deap in the tread I wouldn't worry about it.

My wear bar is not far at all, maybe 2 mm so I plan on buying new tires, unfortunetly, because there are plenty of highway miles left in these.

my front is shot now, and the rear is getting that way. a few days before i plan on throwing on a set of q2's. I think i'm just going to do some burnouts and toast the rear before i get it replaced. Probably have a friend take some pics

You don't do burnouts and waste the tire, unless it's so low it's starting to split, etc.. Change tires, and hang on to the old one. If you end up wearing out the tire, youv'e got a backup for the street. Or say you catch a nail or something in the new one. Youv'e got the old one and can still do street riding on it.

Then why do you take it to the track!?! That is much worse on a bike than a a burnout that is done correctly. I'd agree if it was happening often, but once a year is not going to wear anything out other than the smoking tire. My bike was bought for fun and trust me i'm going to have fun! Pics to follow in a few weeks :) Yea will i hear ya on saving a tire, that's a great idea, but i'm set on having a fun with these.

How exactly is a burnout done "correctly" in a way that wears a tire less than at the track?

I call shenanigans.

Did you read? I'm talking about abuse to the motor/brakes etc...not the tire. We all know that with a burn out your killing the tire. I'm just talking about not bouncing off the rev limiter or burning out a clutch etc....

yeah, if you're talking abuse to the bike, the drag strip is going to be much worse on the bike then a good burnout.

The amount of abuse depends on a lot of stuff at the drag strip. If you are really trying to do well you will put a good bit of abuse on the clutch.

I consider doing anything being done to the bike that it wasn't built to do, abuse. They were built to run around a track where you have airflow and load on the drive train.

burnout = no airflow and improper drive train load, no thank you

But I'm not knocking it, if someone wants to do that to their bikes, I'm all for it!

I just want vid :D
