First accident in 4 years...

Post by Fender943 » Tue Jan 24, 2012 2:25 pm

I was on my way home from class and I decided not to take the highway home like I normally do... I was sitting at a red light on the corner of Shiloh turning east onto Forest. That's where I met my new friend.. He hit the back of my bike it went down hard. I tried my best to keep it upright but unfortunately I was unsuccessful. So it's probably going to be a couple of weeks before the bike goes into the shop.

The damage:
Front Fairing: AFU. Headlight mounting tabs broken, along with a nice chunk missing from my fairing.
Clutch lever is broken
Missing a chunk out of my left foot peg
The paint is scratched
And the most important thing that was damaged was my pride.

Doesn't sound like its too bad to keep you off of it for too long, clutch levers can be had really cheap and take minutes to swap out, pegs are an easy swap too.

Rear ending at a redlight?

Did the person have insurance?

I don't have a single scratch on me.
But it was a city of Garland truck that hit me. So everything should be fine.

Yeah, that bike looks totally rideable with a new lever, footpeg, and the blinker re-mounted. But definitely let the city make the bike good-as-new for you.

Now that you mention it.. my neck is killing me. I think a zx-10r would make the pain go away :D
But I was told by the city of Garland to take it anywhere I want to get it fixed

Thanks guys, I'm glad that I wasn't injured when this happened.

But my only concern now is that some major damage has been done when the guy hit me. It wouldn't take that much to make this bike a total loss.

Take it in to any good shop and have them give it a full once over checking everything.

If it was me, I would get the damage appraised, send them the bill, then fix it myself. That's what I did with my ex500 and wound up with a nice lil chunk of change. Your bike is way prettier than mine was, and way WAY prettier than it is now, so I understand if you want your baby returned to good as new. If they do total it out, they are required by law to offer to sell it back to you as scrap, and they never made me switch it to a salvage title. It was 400 bucks or so to buy it back if I recall.

On the injury thing, to be mindful of later pain. My sister was rear ended like you about 3 years, although sounds like she might of been hit a bit harder, she bruised her tail bone, and I think a bit more because she's still has some discomfort if she sits in one place too long. Wouldn't hurt to have a doc check you out, and a chiropractor will nearly always tell you something is wrong with your back.

That totally sucks!!! I am glad you are ok and yeah, you didn't have a cage protecting you. I would definitely have a doctor check you out (and send the city the bill).

Yea do the chiropractor thing and if he says you have whiplash then get a doctor to recheck before you get any adjustments. That way you have 2 opinions. Then you are talking about having a couple of new bikes..... plus your not stuck out with DR. bills.

The only thing that's hurting right now is my right foot.. I find this kinda odd since my left one was stuck underneath the bike when it went down.

Does anyone know a good shop where I can get the damage appraised?

I would say Cycle Werkz, but I'm not sure if they do that sort of thing.

The service guys at Grapevine Kawasaki are excellent. If it were my bike, that's where I'd take it for an estimate.

I know of a place by me, http://www.colorworksmotorcycles.com/

Interesting place to stop by, all the wrecked bikes and the stories behind them, but this is what they do.

So I went to get an estimate and it's going to cost around $2000 to fix the bike... It's worth $1200.

Does that mean that the insurance company is going to total it then?

I agree...if there is a way, they should be getting you a new bike or straight up, giving you the $2K to fix your bike, regardless of whether it is "totaled" or not.
