So a kick stand sensor is causing the bike to die when you try to take off in 1st? Most bikes the engine dies when the kickstand is down.

Heh, I've had bikes that did that.

The sensor was tied to the kickstand and the clutch and the transmission.

Neutral and stand down? Ok.
In gear and stand down but clutch pulled in? Ok.
Start to let the clutch out? Instant death.

Yea, but how could it be that if simply reving it higher gets it to take off.

That I'm not sure about, because AFAIK those sensors typically kill spark.

Ya know I had thought about the kickstand sensor, but when you said it worked when you revved up higher I dismissed it. Also the kickstand sensor should cause the same issue when you're riding, if you are humming down the freeway and put your kickstand down, it will kill your engine. Silly electronic gremlins!

Two sensors that racers typically either remove or defeat, the kickstand sensor and the tip sensor. Tip for obvious reasons, and kickstand you have to remove anyways. What some people did was just ziptie / tape the kickstand toggle to trick the bike into thinking it had a kickstand in the up position, but with vibrations, the rigging would fail them. I know of at least once kickstand and once for tip sensor to have caused a rider during a race to coast to a stop wondering WTF happened.

I'm having a hard time believing this is the cause because I spent a good 2 minutes wondering why I couldn't go. Every time I dropped it into 1st phooy. It died. Find the green light, start it, rev it up because "Im in control here bitch", drop it in 1st, phooy.
Kickstand up, apologise to no one in particular, start bike, drop in 1st and go.

Got me...all I know is that it's not doing it anymore.

So I cracked open my carbs today due to my eradic idle problems and the bike running lean. I expected to find a bunch of gunk in there. I found my carbs clean enough to eat off of. I pulled all the small parts and inspected everything. No build-up anywhere. Both the butterfly valves seems to be perfectly in sync.

All of the fuel that I siphoned out of the tank was clear with absolutely nothing floating in it. So I adjusted the mix screws to 2.5 turns out (as recommended on the 250 Ninja forums) and the bike still acts the same way it always did (eradic idle). For the heck of it I cleaned the air filter and also did an oil change. I found 2 electrical boots that looked like they may be interfering with the throttle cables next to the carb so I zip tied those far out of the way.

At this point I'm at my wits end with this bike. I have put Seafoam through it, B-12 carb cleaner, made sure the carbs are clean, adjusted the mixture, and still the problems persist. Been running supreme gas through it.

What's next? I thought about plugs. I did inspect the boots and they looked good. I also reseated the boots and checked for any corrosion in them - nothing. Plugs are cheap, I might just go ahead and replace them. I could also adjust the mixture a little more rich since I still got a bit of a pop on a couple of my downshifts.

Bike now has 4700 miles on it. I bought it with 3700 on it a little over a month ago and I've been riding it whenever possible to hopefully get it to run right.

I know, I know there is an SV650 for sale... :(

So I rode the bike to Austin this weekend to look at the carbs. Got the damn thing all back together like I stated earlier and was getting on it to come back up here. I had a little leak on one of the fuel lines when I re-assembled so I looked down to check on it and make sure it wasn't still leaking. I didn't see a leak, but I did see about a 4" bolt sticking out. I pushed it in and checked out what the bolt was supposed to be holding together. Long story short, it was the bolt holding the shock mount to the frame. And sure enough, didn't have a nut that fit the bolt so the bike is still in Austin. Now that would've been fun if that thing came out at 70mph on the highway. :(( It's a sign. I need to get rid of the Ninja and buy an SV... :) Ok, that's what I will tell the wife anyway.

Pro tip--Ace Hardware, Home Depot, and Lowes all sell every size nut you could want.

If it were me, I would have duct-taped the bolt head just to make sure it didn't rattle out, then ridden to a hardware store to buy an appropriate sized nut.
