Gasket sealer or no?

Post by nitzer » Sat Sep 08, 2012 2:18 am

Question for all you exhaust gurus... Just got done doing a test fitting of my new exhaust and I've been reading about all the people using Permatex copper gasket sealer in their slip-on installs. I've also seen people that don't use it. Anyone use it or not used it? Do I need it or not?

Holy cow I started the bike with no exhaust briefly to blow the metal shavings out of the pipe and it was frickin LOUD. :wheelie:

I also started the bike after the test fitting...sounded really nice... :)) The Delkevic exhaust has a removable baffle. I'll test with and without, but I'll probably be leaving it in. From the clips I've heard the tone sounds better with it in.

And yes Striple, I have the cash for the suspension upgrades... :) That will happen this winter.

It works really well but you really shouldn't need it for a slip on. It was mainly design for exhaust manifold gaskets on cars. You could probably use it on o ring gaskets for the headers but I would advise just to get new o rings.

Don't use it - slip on exhaust. Just tighten the clamp but not too tight. Start up and listen for the hissing sound of an exhaust leak. No sound your good. You can hear the hissing - tighten a little more.

My Brocks exhaust didn't come with a clame to connect the muffler to the rest of the exhaust. It was a full system but still has to slide together in spots. They supplied the Permatex so I used it and it seems to have worked great.

One of the joints is leaking so I'm going to have to use it. Don't want to tighten the clamp any further since the bolt is starting to bend. I might rip it apart this weekend and seal it up.
