Carb help feeler
Looking to pick up a project bike soon. It's been sitting 5+ years so I know it will need a fuel system overhaul. I haven't built, or so much as cleaned a carb since the mid 90s... Anyone game to lend a hand? Probably sometime next month

Re: Carb help feeler
This is a really easy job, I've done it on dirtbikes, streetbikes, racebikes and a jet ski. What are you looking to restore? Do you know for certain it sat with fuel in the carbs? If you're lucky the fuel tap was turned off and the engine run dry the last time it ran. Its possible...
My RM-Z450 that Miles knows so well wouldn't run at all before it came to me, but after 10 minutes with the carb open it ran very strong. But the worst I ever saw was the ZX-7R I bought. It had half an inch of green goo in the carb bowls but ran great after 2 cans of carb cleaner hit the trash can.
The best thing to do is get a gasket kit / rebuild kit and find out what the stock jet sizes are. Going back to stock sizes is always a good idea because you know the bike will run fine even if it has had intake/exhaust changes made.
Make sure you have lots of pipe cleaners, small brushes and aerosol carb cleaner. Even safety wire can be useful in cleaning gunk out of small jets. Compressed air can be useful too but only use it when you're absolutely certain there are no small parts that can be shot across the garage never to be seen again. And pay special attention to the float needle/seat combo. Any wear at all on either and both must be replaced. Even if it doesnt look bad - its much easier to replace them than to chase a rich mixture that wont go away even when you go progressively leaner with the jets.
If possible use a workshop manual but this is really not critical if you have a little experience with this kind of work.
And if you're lucky its as easy to clean as this:

Re: Carb help feeler
For all intents and purposes, we'll say it's a Yamaha xt660. I know nothing of the care or condition other than it was last run 5 years ago +/-...
And I've don't carbs before, but i was still in middle school the last time I tore one apart.

Like he said they are real easy just pull everything apart & keep it organized. Maybe take a picture or 2 to have a guide as for your records if you accidentally move stuff. Even after cleaning them you may need to balance the carbs.

Re: Carb help feeler
