Chain and sprocket questions
About how often do you guys change your chain and sprockets? Been reading that most change them both at the same time. Makes sense to me. Any downsides to the 520 conversions? I've got probably about 7k on the current chain and it's making a lot of noise now. I tried to adjust the tension on this weekend and parts of the chain are stretched because it would get loose and then tight as you rotated the wheel. Some of the links are starting to kink also. If there are no downsides really to the 520 conversions, SVRP has the whole conversion for $177 shipped in the stock ratios.

Re: Chain and sprocket questions
I get about 20k out of a chain. I also clean and lube it regular. At the very least I lube it every 500 miles but usually more like 250 miles or weekly. I hear the 520 conversion is fine for anything that isnt turbo ... lol. I plan on doing the 520 when I change.

Re: Chain and sprocket questions
Get an EK chain next time
For me, 2 chains per one set of sprockets as long as the sprockets look fine.
If it's lose then tight and sticky links it's done, replace it.
Clean and lube it regularly, I got a good 25K out of a chain like that, but you have to clean it AND lube it - like all the time.

Re: Chain and sprocket questions
I usually change the sprockets with every other chain, unless there is abnormal wear on the sprockets.

Re: Chain and sprocket questions
Unless it's cheaper, or you're trying to shed every ounce you can, I don't see any good reason to go to 520. It will wear slightly faster, but probably not enough to notice.

Re: Chain and sprocket questions
I run a 525, I am under the assumption (maybe incorrectly) that 520 isn't going to hold up to abuse as well as 525 therefore will have a shorter life (assuming the chain is properly cared for of course).
I hate changing chain's and sprockets, if I can get an extra 5K miles out of a chain by running 525 vs 520 to me that is worth more than the .0001 seconds it would shave of my lap time.

Re: Chain and sprocket questions
The 520 will last you about half the life of a 525 or 530 chain. Steel sprockets will also last longer than aluminum. I would stick with the stock 525 chain that came on your SV.

Re: Chain and sprocket questions
Unless its a race bike, there really is no point in going to a 520 kit.

Re: Chain and sprocket questions
The 520 is actually cheaper which is why I even asked. If it was more expensive that I wouldn't even bother. Not a good enough rider to worry about the performance increase of a 520 chain. Is it normal for the rear sprocket to wobble slightly? Not trying to really be that dumb, but....I mean it is very slightly. The tire tracks straight so it's just the sprocket. I'll probably just end up replacing the whole set this time since I really don't know how many miles are on any of the components. I'm kinda just going on what the guy said that sold it to me.

Re: Chain and sprocket questions
The rear sprocket is not "solid" to the wheel, you should be able to pull it off the wheel and there should be like rubber plug things between the sprocket mount and the wheel.nitzerebbhead wrote:The 520 is actually cheaper which is why I even asked. Re: Chain and sprocket questions
Go with the original equipment. And "blue" loctite, not red on the sprocket bolts.

Now that you mention it, I do remember that it wasn't attached when I had the wheel off last...it was just press fit.fixxervi6 wrote:The rear sprocket is not "solid" to the wheel, you should be able to pull it off the wheel and there should be like rubber plug things between the sprocket mount and the wheel.nitzerebbhead wrote:The 520 is actually cheaper which is why I even asked. Re: Chain and sprocket questions
If I ever have to replace sprockets.... I like renthal or afam for the front, and a supersprox trimetal on the rear...
The the supersprox is an aluminum carrier with steel teeth. Lightweight and super strong.
And i agree on there being no actual advantage to switching to a 520. You may save a few bucks now, but that's it. Long term, stick with the oe size
