190x55 vs 190x50

To show my ignorance with bike tires would I see much of a difference between the two?
The stock size for the r1 is 190x55
but all I can find of the Q3 is 190x50.

The 190x55 is gonna make the rear of your bike sit about 5mm taller than the 190x50. But you really won't notice any difference in ride.

Yeah I didnt figure I would notice a difference. But being the internet I've read a ton of differing views about how the 55 turns in so much better etc.

I notice a LARGE difference with turn in when I switched from stock 190/50 to a 190/55. So a difference will be noticed.

That could of been as much from a different profile tire as it was from the size. Or even just going from an old tire to a new. Unless you switch between bran new tire it's hard to say why you are feeling the difference you feel.

Yeah, this.

The only way to know if it's a really huge difference is to take the same tire in both sizes and swap back and forth while both tires are new. That's very unlikely to happen.

Would it be the same as using a 190/50 and raising the forks 5mm in the triple tree? Moving the forks will affect the steering right. So by changing to a 55 and not raising the forks would do the same thing right?

This is a pretty common topic in any of the forums that are specific to larger bikes. Based on simple math and geometry alone, changing to a 190/55 is going to raise the rear and improve turn-in, at the cost of stability. Depending on your current setup and riding style, you could notice anything from a marginal to a significant difference.

MattR1, in your case that would be analogous to lowering the rear (or raising the front), which is going to make the bike a bit more stable, at the cost of turn-in. That said, if you haven't gotten your suspension dialed in, then just get whatever size installed, then take it to ECR this weekend and have it all dialed in properly. Cost: $40.

Thanks striple that's what I thought.


I installed a 55 rear and had my suspension dialed in and what a difference it made.

Yeah I went ahead ordered the 190x55 as it's the OE size. I would imagine I'm way to heavy for the stock springs/shock.
