Found what was causing the noise in the old engine.
Can anyone else see whats wrong in this picture of cylinders 1 and 2? Inlet side is up.

Now I have to strip out the crank to see if the bottom end has any interesting stories to tell

The cylinder is fine. it even has good compression. but when it starts up, this motor makes a whacking noise so loud it sounds like a hammer on a steel workbench.

Is it just the camera angle or is that cylinder worn way out of round?

I think I can see rings at the bottom left of the cylinder between the piston and cylinder wall and the top of the cylinder looks oblong on the right hand side.

Heres the issue. Notice the imprint in the top of the piston circled in red? The green circle is normal for comparison.
When a valve hits a piston something is seriously wrong. Apparently this motor had a recent valve adjust...

Yep, me too. Hence, I'm not a mechanic and need professional help (on the bike, not the brain).

We've got a full service toolroom where I work, but we're so friggin' busy trying to make money for the big corporation that we have no time for anything cool. We also have a very good 3D designer...and over 2000 dies and molds to keep him and the equipment all tied up.

I know, it would have been so easy to machine a set of lowering links with one. Oh well, at least now if the link fails I can blame T-Rex Racing :-)

my CNC mill is pretty small so is only good for little pieces. and it's only cost me about $5,000 so far. Considering how much I use it I get better value for money from it than i do from any of my other toys and motorcycles.
