More people off-road the R1200GS than the DL-1000. More people off-road the DL-650 than the R1200GS.
If you're looking for a big touring bike to eat road miles, any adventure-touring bike will be about the same. They all have the same inappropriately-sized wheels that take low-mileage rubber and the same kind-of-but-not-quite wind protection.

Yes they are different beasts... But a GS is a GS.. Same with the Triumph Tiger. It's still the same class bike, each one is just speced out to better fit one type of adventure riding over the next.

Yea, and for me the V-Strom is closer to a GS800 than a GS1200, the 800 has larger diameter wheels etc, it's built more for off road than the 1200WillK675 wrote:Yes they are different beasts... The reality, Will, is that when you need a comfortable and upright riding position with enough TQ to get the job done there is really only one bike that comes to mind, the EBR 1190 SX.

Interesting, I don't think I had seen this yet. A recent mag compo touted the BMW S1000R as the cream of the naked liter bike class, but this wasn't included.

Re: Pit Bike
Oh no doubt about that. The 800 is a much more dirt-worthy bike with a 21" front wheel and like 100lbs less weight than the 1200. It's really more of a VERY heavy dirt bike instead of a road bike with some extra ground clearance and a slightly larger front wheel like the R1200GS/V-Strom 1000.fixxervi6 wrote:The GS800 and 1200 are different animals besides just the engine size tho
Will, if you happen to want to stay Triumph, I know a guy selling a Street Triple that has already been set up for touring and performance--suspension is done, he has a set of bags for it, etc. It's still a 675, but more comfy riding position than your Daytona.

No, there is no hard bag mount commercially available for the Street Triple that he could find. It's a Kriega waterproof soft bag setup.WillK675 wrote:Hmmm.. tempting.. again.. You'd want to check carefully on an FJR too then.WillK675 wrote:Eh.. I want hard bags for the extra protection since I'd be throwing my backpack with my work laptop in there.
The bag shape is not good for laptops, and if you put a top case on, you need to also put in a subframe stiffener. At least with the Gen 2 FJRs, anything more than like 10lbs in the top case can actually make the subframe crack. It's a stupid design.
