No title though, make's it a little sketchy to me. It was a street bike at some point so there should be a title for it someplace.

No title simply means that it has no title (i.e., it doesn't imply anything else). There are a million scenarios that can lead to a bike not having a title, and many of them are perfectly legal and reasonable. For instance, my second SV650 racebike was purchased brand new to become a race bike. With no intention of that bike ever running on the street, it did not make sense to title it. This is especially common with track/race bikes, because--who cares! No need for a title --> no title.

Yeah, I see that a lot with track bikes. Some are salvage, some never titled as you say, some who knows why there isn't a title. I've seen some say "no title = stolen" or something to that effect, which I guess could be true.

I'm more worried about buying something that has some damage and doesn't function properly than a title issue that has bills of sale from one person to another. If you never register, the chances of a stolen bike being found at the track are what??? It's kind of a question, not a smart-ass remark.

Yes, you can get a bonded title. Minor pain in the ass, but is usually attached to a significant discount at the time of purchase.

Minimizing the chance of unknowingly buying a stolen bike is pretty simple--you can just run the VIN number.

Anything produced and meant for the roads in this country has a VIN. Anything that has a VIN has some form of legal ownership certificate, Ie title. When a motorcycle or car is built, it will come with a Certificate of Origin/MSO. So even if you buy a motorcycle and never title it since it is just a track bike, that MSO still exists. It has too as that is what is used to create title #1 when you buy. There needs to be some proof that it actually exists. Can't just walk in and say I have this bike and here is the VIN, gimme a title.

That being said, possession is 9/10th of the law....

I wouldn't touch a street bike of value that didn't have a clear title, and I would be hesitant to buy a track bike that didn't at least have one, even if it's salvage but that's just me.

For the track I wouldnt care much. If I thought something was up I would run the vin which cost $5 and 10 seconds of your time. Once that came back clear I would not care one bit.

Somewhat true...

My Quad was not sold to me with a title from a Suzuki dealer. I paid cash. All I got was a certificate of origin with it...ie: no title. Quads in MN are not licensed and therefore do not require a title, but they do have a VIN number. When I was thinking about selling it a guy here in TX asked if I had the title. There was no title so I took my certificate of origin and got a TX title for it just in case I decide to sell it later.

What part of what I said was somewhat true? Sounds like you validated everything I said. Just because the state didn't require a title to be produced, you were given the paperwork to get one. Therefore that paperwork exists for anything with a VIN, whether you possess it or not.

My fear with non titled vehicles is that someone buys a vehicle for cash, no title, no bill of sale. What's to prevent the dude you bought it from to go in, get the title with the MSO he found, and report it stolen?

You're statement implied that only things meant for the road have a VIN. I think he was simply pointing out that even off road vehicles can have VINs.
