MSRC 1.3 June 10/11

Post by WickerMan » Thu Apr 06, 2017 9:04 am

So I figured I'd start its own thread for the 1.3 days in June, since it seems to be a popular track with those that have ridden on it. Saturday has levels: new 1, 1.5, and level 2. Sunday is level 1, 2, cruiser/backroad.

Since this will be my first time on this track, and providing I can get my credit in time, would I be 1 or 1.5?

You would be 1.5. You've heard the safety and basics lectures before. In 1.5, if you will recall, the instructors usually ask to work with students in the first round after RR that haven't been on that particular track before.

I am planning to be there one day, but have not settled on which day.

Thanks Jeff. I'm going to go for Saturday as I like the idea of the dedicated 1.5 level.

I have toyed with the idea of taking the VStrom to the back road group, but I'm not sure it is worth dedicating a day for that.

Same. I have that Nighthawk 750, that with new tires handles really well, but it's not that kind of machine, so I figured what's the point.

You got the new Triple broken in and ready for the track?

I just passed 550mi so not fully broken in yet. Considering where I am on that and that this is the 1.3 I'm thinking I'm going to ride the Ninja 300.

Is anyone, besides me, excited about this weekend? I haven't been on the track, on 2 wheels at least, since Halloween. I can't wait. I will be there Saturday morning at about 7, staying at the parents LH nearby.

Shane: Are you doing the 1.5 or 1 new with your boy?

Jacob will ride the R6 in the level 1 first time group. I am going to just be with him to help and support him. It's kind of complicated but since we realized that the boys were going to ride on the street in the metroplex we(wife and me) have taken steps like getting dirt bikes, to help them with experience and skills to perhaps keep them from having bad outcomes when their Survival Reactions try to kill them.

I may be more excited just to go be with him than he is to be doing his first track day!

I still have a club canopy if someone wants to get it from me in order to take. I can bring it to bike night this week or work out another time/place to get it from me.

Those of you registered just got the same email I did. The rest of you, just an interesting FYI... They have opened the new club house by the skid pad on the 1.3 side and that's where RS will be based. Everyone will pit basically around the skid pad. I am a little worried that it could get crowded. I will be going down Friday to claim a spot. Maybe there will be fewer big trailers for the 1.3 since there is no level 3.

More FYI for those not going... Here is the parking picture they sent

And the text
VERY IMPORTANT! We are sharing the track with Driver's Edge School this weekend. All RideSmart participants must enter the 1.3 track (see below) where the YELLOW CIRCLE is. You'll drive past the new garage/clubhouse, and parking is on the 1.3 Skid Pad, bordered by the green lines in the picture. You may park on the grass up to the fence as indicated. We DO NOT have access to the rest of the facility, you MUST park up on the skid pad. DO NOT park near the clubhouses or trackside that we normally use.
Registration is in the clubhouse marked with the Green Star.

That's not unusual. They've shared the track like this in the past and it wasn't an issue. There is more space on the skid pad than you realize so long as people park smart, and they usually do.

I plan on showing up by 6:45 if possible, so I'm not rushed trying to make the truck track drive, as its my first track day on something besides the 1.7CCW. And I have time to get tips from y'all that have done it before.

One tip that so many new to the track seem to have a hard time doing. Don't follow the track, follow the line. There are several "turns" on that track that are not really turns, you just run them in a straight line. So many people follow the track and the turn it's ridiculous. On the plus side though, it makes for a great place to pass people.

One other tip, the hairpin turn can be a bit tricky and there are several lines through the turn that work. You just have to play around with it and figure out what works for you and your bike. The line the instructors show is usually a decent and safe line, but the line that works best for you could be significantly different.

And lastly, don't let the cones they setup on the hill scare you. If they set them where they typically do, they will be to far to the left for the ideal line over the hill. Don't be afraid to get right up next to the cones. Last time I ran, several in lvl 2 complained about the cones and a few of us hit the last one a couple of times. If you get things lined up correctly going over the hill you can be at full power going down the other side turning the turn into a straight line, just be ready for some heavy braking.

The 1.3 is so much fun as a result of all these little things that seem to take most people a good while to learn. But once you get them, the track can be a damn fast track.

There really is just one thing I would offer for you, if you forget everything else, you need to keep mindful of one thing, and I really can't emphasize this enough: Do not, I repeat, do not, under any circumstances, take, from anyone, any wooden nickels.

Well, that and relax and have fun. I will see you in the morning. It's gonna be a hoot!

Not good for me. 4th lap after RR. Too fast into turn one, went off, hit the front brake, guess what happened right after that? I had the jersey and Randy following. What was I thinking going that fast on a track I don't know. I feel so stupid. Ass wrote a check my talent couldn't cash. I could of coasted to a stop 15 feet past where I crashed. Sprained thumb, smacked my shoulder real good, pinched my calf. I'm hurt but I think I'll be ok. I still can't believe it. Only a few hundred in damage to the bike though. I don't know what to say past that.
