Movie Review Thread

Post by DarcShadow » Mon Jan 11, 2016 9:59 am

Seen a good movie, or bad one, lately and care to share? Just no spoilers, or if you must, be sure to warn people.

I'll start it off, finally had a free couple of nights and went to see The Martian and the new Star Wars.

Star Wars - Bit of a let down. It did an amazing job of holding to the look and feel of the original movies with improved, but not over the top special effects. However, because it held so closely to the original, it at times felt old and out of date. The story line was a bit of a let down as well. It was way to close to the original movie, so close that is was comical at times(remember the Death Star trench flight scene? It's back, which made no sense in the original movie, why in the hell did they do it again?). There was really only one "surprise" and that wasn't all that big of a surprise. The entire movie was way to easy to predict and you knew pretty much what was going to happen long before it did. With all the hype and excitement around the movie I expected something more captivating. This was actually a bit boring at times, and the only "mystery" never gets addressed. It will likely be addressed in the next movie, which based on how this one ended, I can pretty much predict the entire plot to the next one, which will just be a retelling of Star Wars: The Jedi Returns.

The Martian - Holy crap that was a good movie and can't recommend it enough to everyone. I wish I would of got the chance to see in IMAX but even in a standard theater it was very impressive. The movie has some great lines that, despite the "serious" nature of the situation, were down right hilarious and everyone in the theater was laughing. I'm sure there were things that a true space geek would have noticed as wrong, or not possible, but nothing jumped out at me as being bad science. I would highly recommend this movie to anyone, Melissa didn't see it with me, but I think she would of enjoyed it as well.

I was reading that J.J. did that on purpose with Star wars to "set the stage" for the next 5

And sadly, I'll likely go see all of them, even though I have little doubt there will be anything too surprising or interesting story wise.

I just re-watched SW Episodes 4,5,6,1 and 2 over the holidays, and have 3 remaining (can't remember if I've seen it), before trying on the new one. I honestly couldn't remember if I had seen them all over the many years (come to find out I had up to this point), thought I needed a refresher before seeing the new one.

The new Alvin & the Chipmunks Roadchips, good as Chipmunk movies go.
The Good Dinosaur was pretty darn cute.
Daddy's Home, pretty predictable, but has some laughs here and there.

Vacation - Laughed my ass off, better than the reviews for it.

Star Wars - Liked it, I agree it was slow at times and crammed too much in with too much unanswered leaving us hanging. But I had moments sitting there just thinking this is so bad ass to have star wars back because it had the epic feel to it with the chase scene and battle scenes and music were all good. One thing it doesn't do as good as the 1,2,3 is the saber battles and what not were not as interesting, that's one thing the first 3 movies actually had good was the saber duels. I'm better the next one will be fresh and neat. If JJ was doing the next one i would beleive he would put a twist to it but he's not so no telling what will happen. I thought he did good with the Trek remakes.

Daddy's home - Pretty much same as lonestar's reveiw.

I disagree, movie has been over hyped and over rated :P.

It's solid, but it's not amazing!

The best superhero movie I have seen yet. It kept to the real deadpool instead of making him nice for the public. Loved it.

Meh, the whole cutting it up with the audience kind of killed it for me. take that out and i would give it better score.

That IS Deadpool though. He is notorious for breaking "the 4th wall", they couldn't have made a Deadpool movie and not done that. There was even a whole series of comics where he was on a mission to kill his artist.

I see a ton of movies...kinda a passion. Deadpool was by far the best movie I have seen in years. No joke, the humor, visuals, breaking of 4th wall was refreshing. Not for kids but that's what it should have been. I can't remember the last time I laughed so hard I was in tears. I went to see it with a group of friends and not one including the theatre was disappointed. At the end people were clapping and the banter leaving was just as funny. I need to see it again just to catch things I may have missed the first time.

I drank the kool aid.

Saw Deadpool last night and it lived up to the expatiations I had for it. I was in tears I was laughing so hard at parts, even the opening credits were pretty funny. And like all Marvel movies of recent, be sure to stick around for the bonus scene after the credits.

I was a little surprised at the nudity. From the reviews I'd heard I was expecting quite a bit more. It was hardly noticed really, I wouldn't take a kid to it, but a teen wouldn't be an issue. Even the graphic violence wasn't too bad in that it was relatively realistic, meaning the blood and guts you saw were about what you would expect for a gun shot to the head, or limb being cut off.

Ok, not a movie, but has anyone been watching the Lucifer series? I just watched the first two episodes last night and so far I'm liking the show. It has an interesting take on the Devil and I really like the humor sprinkled through out the show. Has some pretty good music throughout the show as well.

Okay, not a movie, but I'm a music guy, and I've been watching the HBO series Vinyl, which is pretty good also.

iZombie and Gotham are pretty decent TV series on Netflix. Helix is also not bad, the story starts to become a little weird in the later episodes.

Deadpool was amazing, I have seen it 3 times already due to friends going at different times. The second time I did notice more about the love story than the original time I went. The third time it was still good. Will buy it when it comes out on DVD.

I haven't checked out Lucifer but I probably will tonight if I get off work at a reasonable time.

Star Wars was just okay for me, it did follow the Star Wars theme which I did love; but I really have no desire to see it again. I will though since it is Star Wars and usually once every few years I go on a binge watch.

You don't have to watch Lucifer on TV, or Hulu. He's wandering about, alive and well, you can see him any day if you pay attention. :D

There's a great scene in the show with a street side preacher saying just that and Lucifer standing there responding to him. It was great.

Saw The Jungle Book over the weekend. Damn the CGI guys are getting good. You'd swear the animals are all real and actually talking. King Louie was the only one that took me out of the movie a bit because Christopher Walken's voice was so recognizable. A pretty good remake of the original, although I still prefer the animated version.

There was also a preview for a Disney film that I had to look up the title on google to figure out what it meant. Title is The BFG. I know what BFG means in my world, Big F Gun, but had no idea what it meant in Disney's world. Turns out it's Big Friendly Giant.

Also watched ex_machina over the weekend. An interesting topic and could be thought provoking, but the movie is amazingly slow and gets a little boring.

Saw Captain America. Was fairly good, drug out a few points, but overall It was up there with the other movies. If you liked any avengers Movies you'll like this one, it's one of the better Marvel movies.
