That's cool. It didn't look like it had an explosive round option though. I have a hard time believing a 5 inch hole is going to do a lot to sink ships though with today's modern ship design. Send a 10 lb HE round through 4 steel plates before exploding though.....

I knew someone who was working on this project several years ago. She was a materials expert

You wouldn't need an explosive round. The round would probably blow in flight first off but its really not needed. A 5 inch hole isn't a whole lot to deal with but think of it like this. 10 5 inch holes in one minute from each gun. Bring battleships out of the mothballs and arm these in the spots of the old guns and you have about 30 railguns. This means you could put 300 5 inch holes in a ship in one minute. No ship will be able to take that. As the tech gets better you can replace the gun on tanks and other stuff as well. Lots of possibility. The issue really have is that there is a story on it. This kind of stuff should be completely secret so no other nation knows the capabilities we have. I am sure we are much farther along than they are letting on but still there are things that everyone don't need to know about.

Or they're not nearly as far along as they story leads you to believe and they want other nations to worry and waste money trying to catch up rather than spending it on other things.

Misdirection, I like it.

My catch is look at the power requirements of that gun, it would be hard for a ship to power 1 gun let alone 5 or 10

That is true but with nuclear powered ships it might be possible. Not to mention I am sure they are going to figure ways to reduce the power needed or store the power needed somehow.

In any case I like the idea.

Nuke doesn't mean a shit load of wattage output, it just means they only have to refuel like every 20 to 40 years or some crazy shit like that, they still rely on driving turbines.

I'm sure we could come up with some, just don't expect the projectiles to travel very far, or fast.

True but I am sure they can figure out something. Might have to have a whole new design ship that is the size of a carrier or something.

You know, that makes me wonder, I've never actually seen the guns for the F-16 around here. I'd think they get installed as part of the build but I don't know. They might be put in after delivery.

One a side note...get ready for some rain. It's pissin' n' pourin' here, and looks like it will be for a while. A lot of lightning, thunder, a little wind but not much so far, and no hail yet. Just a lot of water. And guess where it's headed. :HeadScratch: :D
