Any concerns around the strength/quality of the re-used metal? I'm sure you'll be mixing different alloys together in the process, creating in the end, an unknown alloy unless of course it's all 100% straight aluminum.
The offcuts are all T6061 but I dont know the alloy the cases are made of. Good point though, I'll keep them separate. Like I said, I think the biggest issue with the remelted metal will be porosity. Judging from that video, pouring the liquid metal filters out a lot of impurities so i guess the best thing to do is test it and find out.

I found some molds at Home Depot I can use to cast the sand/plaster, but they didnt have any plaster of paris or I would have started casting today. The nearest place that has it in stock is a walmart in ft. worth so next time i have some spare time I'll go get it - $30 for 50lbs of plaster, $4 for 50lbs of sand. The forms are $30 for both. I have steel pipe for the inlet that I'll cast in place versus cutting a hole in the hardened furnace.
i have a small propane canister that I'd like to use as a crucible but I dont know if its 100% empty or not - or how to cut it open without finding it has enough gas inside to detonate...
i can either use a hair dryer like in the video or a shop vac.

could be fun. Should be interesting.

In college I melted down an engine block, alot of the impurities burn off, others float to the top so I had to skim the surface before pouring it.

I've thought about building a forge before, I believe I could build a better one than most of the you-tubers out there.

I did the foam casting btw

That's a great story. To this day I am convinced a buddy and I sat at DFW airport waiting for a flight to Vegas, and he was sitting a couple of rows over, trying very hard not to be noticed. Hat pulled way down low, slouching deep into the chair, reading a magazine or a comic book.... never got up the nerve to go ask if it was really him or not.

But I've come to hate Vacuumized Metal (VM).

All those big truck sized rear emblems you see on Chevy's, F-150's, Escalades, that are all fading out are all made with VM coatings. And those drive me nuts to see those fading/washing out.

That's cool, no electricity needed. So if you did build one, what would you use it for? I could honestly see using something like this for deep woods camping (like where we used to go in CT). Granted we had the river right by our setup but still.

From what I've read they're not all encrypted, just the ones required by people like Bazzaz and Power Commander. Have you seen the thread on GuzziDiag on the RSV4 forum? Last I heard they were able to pick up most of the CAN bus channels but the torque demand signal was indecipherable.

I don't go over to the RSV4 forums much, they are kinda slow.
