What's the news spin on it?

Looks like at best negligence on the minivan, at worst could probably be argued that it was attempted murder.

Either way the fact that the guy was a total squid doesn't justify any other driver taking him out, no matter how much you feel he deserved it.

My take is that the cage was a prick

That being said, riding in traffic is really dangerous and one must be uber vigilant for your own safety.

I don't think doing standups justifies a car hitting a bike by any stretch but not paying attention to traffic by squiding it up like an ass is asking for trouble.

The van was completely at fault. Then the van didnt stop and that makes it worse.

Now the guy might have avoided the van if he was on both wheels and paying attention.... or he might have had his leg crushed by the van if he was on two wheels and not paying attention lol. But this has nothing to do with who was at fault.

The van is at fault and the driver could be looking at jail time depending on how many charges the prosecutor wants to tack on. However, seeing as the biker could be cited for reckless riding at the time of the accident they probably won't go to far with the van driver. They slap him with leaving the scene of an accident and be done.

They were both dicks, and it's a good reason not to ride stand-ups on public streets.

I don't think there's really a media spin per se, they are pointing out the conflicting opinions. Some say the stunter is at fault and other's say it's the van's fault. I think it's a good thing that this rider(Michael Crane) has gotten the media's attention. It looks like the van intentionally ran into him and like a typical coward took off. Thankfully other people stopped to help. I'd like to see what becomes of this. The kid on the bike should get a wrist slap for what he was doing, but, maybe the experience itself is a lesson enough. As for the van driver, and this is my opinion, it looks like he targeted him and should be held accountable. Maybe I'm more hyper-aware but as invisible as we are riding, it's like we also have targets on our backs as well. Why people think that's okay to entertain the thought (and worse act on it) of screwing around with another person's life just to be a douche on the road is beyond me. Egos should be checked at the door (or kickstand) before getting out on the road.

The media buzz surrounding that one is pretty silly. The stunter deserves to get a ticket for being a douche, but that is entirely independent of the van smashing into the rider, and then committing a hit-and-run. I wish we didn't have so many damn squids giving motorcycles a bad name. Lots of people (in Dallas especially) think of them as the average motorcycle rider.

I would almost bet that the van didn't see the bike, or thought there was room to get in and didn't realize they hit him. Looks to me like they are just another one of those idiots that almost misses their exit and swerves over at the last second.

I can see the van driver being distracted and not seeing the rider, but I don't buy the driver not realizing that he/she hit another vehicle. I once smashed into a road sign in a big van on a lonely highway in Mexico, moving at the speed of fart, and I still noticed it (and couldn't stop laughing). :D

I think I'm already jaded against the cage driver when it's cage vs. bike (okay not in every single situation but a good lot of them). Good point, the van probably thought they could get around the bike but the van had to have seen it, screwing around on a phone or distracted I can't buy it. It's when the driver looks at you, does whatever the hell they want to anyway, sees you go down and speeds off... (okay I've beaten that horse beyond death)

The kid didn't deserve that and I won't call karma on that one, but he really shouldn't have been pulling that stunting garbage on a busy highway... exit ramp...

I'm with you...it's amazing to me how many people are totally oblivious to their surroundings when they are driving. Quick exit ramp moves once they go "oh shit, that's my exit". I've seen cars hit each other making exactly that move, so that it happens to a bike is totally believable. As for not stopping...no insurance.

I saw a car the other day change lanes into a big pickup truck on 380 on the way back from Denton, car just merged on over, rubbed tires and fender, smoke billowed out. If that car couldn't see this big Ford F-250 with 30" tires how are they going to see a little motorcycle? Ug, people are idiots.

I doubt the wheelie would have made an ounce of difference in this collision. The van was going to cut in regardless.

Until this country treats a driving license as a privilege and not a right, we will continue to have an astounding level of un-safe, incompetent drivers putting everyone else at risk.

You can't figure out you blew your exit, go to the next one, turn around, and not be lost? You shouldn't be on the road to begin with....
