Went up to ECR, err down on ECR Sunday, 3/15...

Post by LonestarCBR » Mon Mar 16, 2015 1:53 pm

First, thanks to Striple for the instruction during the day. And I just want to say, later in the day, I had the opportunity to ride behind him when he got a little more serious. He was on the Triumph, not the race bike, and honestly, he was not fast...he was F'ING FAST! I was very impressed.

Arrived bright and early waiting on someone to open the friggin' gate.
ECR Sign.jpg
Nice to have a covered garage area to stage in, never had to get he canopy out of the trailer.
ECR Garage.jpg
I've got a video to post later riding around with Striple in his truck, showing a lot of the nuances and condition of the track for those unfamiliar or haven't been there in a while.

It was a cloudy, misty, dampish sort of day for the most part.

A COUPLE of cars go out before the bikes...then all six of us or so to start with...until the sun came out after lunch, then it was like cockroaches coming out of the wood work. Seriously though, only maybe 12-15 bikes total if I were guessing. 30 minute sessions, and I must say, a much more challenging track than Cresson. Some said it wasn't a good beginner's track, but in retrospect, I'm not sure I agree. This track definitely makes you focus on basic skills more in my opinion. Regardless, and I'm sure this can be said of any track...it was fun.

Until...

Third sessions out, and I know where the treacherous spot are (water seapage), but as I focused on picking up my pace, I got sloppy.

Note the well engineered clutch lever...

No leaks...not a single drop...

Pit-Bull trailer restraint pin still fits...

DS, I need another black reflective shark...he took the brunt of the impact...

Hopefully this will "buff out"...
ECR Tank.jpg
I'll have the video from my bike later,, which doesn't necessarily show you a lot, but basically I was coming out of Turn 2 at my quickest pace of the day (I didn't say fast, just quickest), still healed over a little, right through the water, on the gas, and BAM. The ass-end kicks out, then those sticky tires I like so much dug into the dry pavement as I came out of the wet spot, and as the say in Stephenville, "the rodeo is on". Basically it felt like a high side as the rear end caught, but from the video, the bike only slid one side. At any rate, it was all physics, as it happened very quickly.

However, I'm 99.9% sure I didn't just slide. I felt like I was launched and landed hard. As I sat up in in the middle of the track, I didn't even have air left in my toes, much less my lungs. I wasn't sure I was going to get my breath back for a few seconds. Then got a breath, wiggled a few things, and they all seemed to work, so I got up, and my bike was a good ways farther down the track. I'd guess 50-80', but then again, my focus might have been off a little at this point. You'll see Striple running back down the track near the end of the video. He probably wasn't planning on getting that much of a workout.

Bike started back up and rode straight, I finally started back up and walked straight (plus I knew the date and where I was, plus when I born and where...as far as they knew :D ), so back to the track it was after lunch. Triumph, takes a licking and keeps on ticking! I did however run out of gas (figuratively, not literally) and didn't ride the last session. I was already stiff and was having to work too hard...I felt like I was ready to make another mistake.

Other than bugs, and some very light knee puck scrapes, my suit was it pretty good shape. WAS. Now it looks like a real suit. My body...feels like it just finished a bout in the octagon...and I didn't win.

Somehow I managed to skin up my left elbow fairly well, INSIDE the suit. I assume this is where I landed first, but that might have been on my back, considering the sucking wind issue. I thought that it would have been cool if Striple had been behind me, to capture it on video, then I realized how f'ing stupid I probably looked and decided I was glad he wasn't.

Anyway, sh*t happens, and I don't want to discourage any of you newbie track riders...ride your ride, work on lines and body position, it's the most fun you'll have with your gear on. I'm still scheduled for May, lesson learned.

Oh yeah, one last thing...DAMMIT!

Thought you had sliders?

Did you get rash on your arm or a burn, do you wear under armor under your leathers?

Overall sounds like a good crash, minimal damage and you walked away, if your gonna crash that's the way to do it.

And this almost hurt my feelings the most...but it did it's job well. I'm honestly confounded as to how it is that it's not in worse shape.

In the trailer. I couldn't get the frame bolts loose with the tools I had, then ran out of time. Bad excuse, but it is what it is at this point. They would have saved the tank and shark, not sure of much else.

Short sleeve heat-out. I had a long sleeve t-shirt in the car. Here's a picture, you decide which it is. I didn't even notice it for a while, and it was starting to stick to the liner and pull as the blood dried. Still doesn't really hurt much. I'm sorest in my shoulders and back.

Looks like impact bruised/suite grabbed a chunk of skin. I ended up with a "burn" after my crash from the leather

Also joking aside, thanks everyone. I'll have a "help fix Lonestar's bike" jar at the next bike night I attend for repairs and a new helmet. :-D

But seriously...I might.

I think some companies may give you some credit if you turn in a busted helmet - I could be wrong.

I think what he means is that if you call the company and tell them you wrecked while in their helmet and that it did its job, they may ask you send it in and they may replace it. I have heard of some companies doing this but I don't know which ones (I think they use it as a model that was subjected to real action to show others but I am not sure).

Yeah, I was thinking he might be talking about the manufacturer and was already looking at the Arai site. I know they take them in for evaluation, not sure what else.

I don't remember, I think Bell and Shoei do it - I seriously can't remember where I got it from.

Glad your ok. As for the helmets I know SparX will replace a helmet that was wrecked in. Not sure what other companies but it don't hurt to call and ask ... maybe you can at least get a discount.
