Hero5 Black Overlays

Post by 111 » Mon Nov 28, 2016 6:43 pm

I'm a couple months late, but it looks like the Hero5 is now available. I'm finally looking at buying a gopro, and was looking at the features to see if it was even worth getting the Hero5.

The black does auto gps tagging and Gopro also announced the ability to add overlays for speed, direction, Gforce, altitude, and path with the Quik desktop App.

I also really like the stabilization they come with now.

I would go with the session 5. Still has the stabilization.

I think I'm gonna go with the session, but I'm curious why you say that. I like the size and it has a more appealing price.

Personally, I'd skip any Gopro without the screen on the back. Almost every time I have used mine, the screen helps me do a much better job of framing a shot and taking a quick video for review before starting off. I have a great video of riding home after the bike night with the storm, with the dash in frame , the windscreen, and the colors adjusted enough to see lightning in the sky through the screen. No chance if I didn't have the screen to see it and adjust as needed.

yeah but without the screen you can easily see the 'shot' on your phone, it actually works fairly well.

I like the screen, but honestly, it's not that bad a deal now that i've used the app. The size, the cost, and it's pretty muich the same minus 4k framerate which no one uses so it's totally the way to go. If i get a 5, it's going to be the new session.

I agree the app is easy to use and works well for getting the shot. Only down side is if you are going to be on a like run you'll want to remember to turn the WiFi off so it doesn't needlessly drain the battery.

Yeah, then you got to put your phone away, or you may be somewhere you don't have your phone, and you have to wait for the connection to happen.....

I've used mine side by side, and by the time my buddy is done, I'm already recording, gloves on, kickstand up, engine running, waiting on my buddy to start putting his phone away....

I ended up getting the hero5 black. The thing that made my decision is that the session doesn't have a replaceable battery. Which not only means you get a longer runtime swapping to a new battery but the life of the camera should theoretically be longer. A couple other thing but not as important are raw files for editing, better censor for quality, and the screen. Although a few places have the session for 199 right now.

I also plan on getting the karma gimbal as soon as they are back in Stock. Those two paired together make some insanely nice footage.

On a side note I noticed Dji makes a gimbal for phones which is really awesome. I almost decided to get this unit instead of the gopro since I would only be paying for the gimbal. I decided to get to gopro so I didn't have to worry about breaking my phone while snowboarding etc. The gopro also provides nice mounting options when not using the gimbal like on your windshield.
