Inadvertently did part of Colorado BDR
Didn't realize this was on the BDR until a couple guys on proper dirt bikes told me.

Rick, you ever do the CO BDR? They tell me it is suitable for upgraded jeeps. No single track.

Don't think so, everything I did was in the San Juans

The BDR goes NE from Cortez to Telluride to Buena Vista, kinda through the San Juans. But then continues up to the Wyoming border.

I'm strongly considering a full run of it next year.

Ran across this place not expecting it. It was open to the public for free and people were climbing all the way up to the metal structures at the top.

Bishop's Castle, I've been there. Pretty crazy place. I too ran across it on accident. Had just seen a thing about in on travel channel like the week before then happened to drive past it. Hit the brakes and back up to check it out.

Looking at the map, looks like I've done quite a bit of it actually, corkscrew, cinnamon etc, looks like it mostly sticks to the easier routes in the area.
I'm already planning on heading up again in July of 2022 and I'll be hitting some of those roads again for sure, I'm surprised it goes Ohpir and not Imogene - imogene is way way better, but a lot harder but ophir is just lame, I've been all over that area.
I know this is a motorcycle thing but the absolute best advice I could give for some of this is to rent a jeep

Re: Inadvertently did part of Colorado BDR
The BDR shows alternate routes in a couple of places, but I haven't gotten the Butler map or the "official" package from ridebdr.com or anything. Just looking at satellite photos, some of the roads look pretty rocky and the south end of the BDR looks like there are some really sandy sections.
Sarena dropped me and the bike off in Santa Rosa, NM and I rode up back roads and forest service roads from there to Canon City. Went past Taos and Angle Fire and then up into Colorado. Some decent paved roads, but I probably don't need to repeat that section.
Phantom Canyon road, much of which used to be a gold rush era rail line, so it was mostly pretty easy, not steep or sharp curves. A "shortcut" up a wash was more of a challenge. Once up in Colorado I started flirting with the tree line

Re: Inadvertently did part of Colorado BDR
Overall a really great ride. I did come back with a leaky fork seal. The maps in Basecamp have some inaccuracies which I reported. In more than one case it tried to send me down narrow trails marked for no motorized vehicles. (Yes I was in motorcycle mode when routing). Checking the satellite imagery for the back country routing seems to be necessary.
Up in Colorado I did some riding around Breckenridge. Almost ran through a herd of Elk which crossed the road in front of me to get to the creek.

Man, if there was riding like that around here I'd still have my KLR/GS
