Cooler Weather Riding Gear

Post by Polokid69 » Fri Oct 19, 2012 6:19 am

Any suggestions for riding pants that I can put over my work pants for riding to work in cooler weather ? Also, any suggestions for face mask or I think they call it a baclava that covers your neck and chin ?

Cycle Gear has baklavas on sale for 15 bux. In fact, all of their freeze-out gear is on sale. I picked up nearly a fully suit last week.

Balaclava are nice but be aware they make your helmit a tight fit. If you get one, make sure you get one with a heavier chin curtain, makes a huge difference. Other options are those half face mask. I've never tried one though. Not sure how well they work with a full face helmet.

Believe it or not, the Bilt pants from Cycle Gear are warm, cheap, and easy enough to use as overpants for commuting to work.

As for keeping your neck warm, I prefer the neck-only kind, not the balaclava that goes over your head. Make sure you get something wind proof, not just fleece. At highway speeds fleece is worthless. Mine is from Rev-It and it rocks. Covers your neck, chin, and nose. I don't ever put it over my nose, just my chin to prevent my glasses from fogging up.

Nope. I've got leather for both of those. I just needed some pants last year to wear as overpants when it was really cold, and I was surprised at how easy the Bilt stuff was to use.

I still don't trust it to hold up to daily wear, but overpants for me are a seasonal thing. I only wear them a few months a year.

I am thinking the same way of the jacket and gloves. Just didnt know if you had experience. My leather is all perf and lets lots of air through.

:icon_whs0be: and they are PITA after you put your helmet on too (covers part of your eye or something stupid and annoying like that). I did purchase a neck scarf? thingy. You just pull it over your head and it sits around your neck....kinda like the turtleneck without the sweater. I like that better than the bakalava.

I have a nice collection of balaclavas, and actually like using them in the winter. The trick is to find those in which the material is not too thick, yet still solid enough to provide ample protection to the neck. There are also a bunch of variations derived from them, including things that make you look a bit like Hannibal Lecter. Most of them will work, but you do occasionally have to wiggle them into place after you put your helmet on.

This is the best winter jacket you can buy, period.

I have one made by FirstGear, but they stopped making it. I think they sold the design to River Road, because it looks exactly the same.

Yea but I only wear something like this when it gets really cold (below freezing) or cold and wet and dont wanna spend the cash on it.... plus the dayglow deal would help for getting on base.

True. Nothing wrong with a Glowstick, except it's only good down to 45F or so without additional insulation. You'll want to get a pullover or something to wear below that.

Anything Olympia makes that is winter specific is awesome. Buy it one size larger so you can wear jeans/work pants and sweaters/hoodies or light jackets underneath.
