Helmet Suggestions

Post by DiggerT67 » Mon Oct 29, 2012 5:19 pm

I've been kicking around buying a new helmet. I'm looking in the $400 or less range.

I've been looking at Shark and I am pretty impressed...

Any suggestions????

I was looking at that one. If you get the total price up to $350 (I added two smoked shields to the order), you can take 20% off bringing the price with the shields and helmet to $309. Not bad IMHO for a carbon fiber helmet at just over 3lbs.

I'm mostly pleased with my speed and strength helmet.

My Arai is my favorite, Nolan is a total POS waste of money. I haven't ridden in my other one yet, JHC or whatever it's called

Found it even cheaper:

Check out the Bell helmets. You can actually keep it under 400 and get an Shoie X11 or 12 maybe and they are truely great!

This is just my opinion, but i would go with the bigger names...shoei, arai for the higher end. Scorpion, bell for a little lower end. I bought a Oneil helmet for my first one(they make dirtbike helmets mostly) and it was the worst buy ever. I have a shoei rf-1100 and so do many many many other members, it's a quality helmet.

I like the looks but it does not have a SNELL rating. It'd be find for the street but you would not be allowed to use it at the track.

Also, pay attention to weight. For reference the RS-1100 is 3 lbs, the one you're looking at is 3.5. Half pound doesn't sound like much but it can really start to wear on you on longer rides.

The big thing you are paying for in helmets if comfort. For the most part they all protect you equally well and in some cases the cheaper lids do a better job then the high end ones but if it's not comfortable you're not going to enjoy the ride.

The Shoei Qwest is on sale for a bunch of different designs, they can be had for under $300.

You won't find a more comfortable helmet, if your head fits the Shoei shape.

Yeah, I would look diligently for some on sale Shoei's. Shoei was my first helmet and I loved it. Made a terrible mistake and picked up a $200 paper mache helmet(AKA a Scorpion modular) about 6 months ago. Then, last weekend, finally got my hands on a Shoei RF1100. Got it brand new for $260 at Grapevine Kawasaki. I freaking love this helmet.

Point is, you CAN get great deals out there. Hit up a bunch of shops and see what you can find. You might be surprised to find a great helmet that's marked down like I did.

If you haven't found a helmet yet, you may want to go to IMS this weekend. It's a great place to find some really good deals on gear.
