Buying a helmet

Post by Stardog82 » Thu Nov 29, 2012 8:02 pm

I basically know nothing about helmets other than the dot/snell stamp. I put this one on earlier today. It felt pretty good and looked like it would be accommodating for the sena hardware. All I know about the Bell brand is what Rick told me, which was "Bell are pretty good." Any thoughts? I'll be buying it from Family Powersport since it's the same price.

A modular helmet flips between a full face and a 3/4 helmet.. I would not recommend one.

Please keep away from the mod helmets...please! Better than a half helmet, but they won't let you on the track with it

Keep in mind too, that a modular helmet has that point of failure. If you were to wreck again but on your face, that modular part may not protect your maxilla. There was a guy that did a track day sometime this year (a few months ago down south) with Ridesmart (someone here may be more familiar with the story than myself), who had a modular helmet and wrecked. I believe his jaw was broke.

On that note, I had a Bell Vortex helmet. The arrow line is the cheaper line (you get what you buy). If you are going Bell, I would recommend the Vortex line. That line is a little more expensive but it is still reasonable. When I say a little more expensive, I am talking a total cost before taxes of about $120. Sometimes, if you search the internet (after trying one on), you might find a better deal. That is what I did with my Shoei.

The one I tried on was an arrow. I had no complaints with it. Can ya elaborate a tad on the differences?

I would say it is. The Vortex was very comfortable and the wind noise was not bad. Arrow is their low end, budget helmet. The star line is their top line. I like the vortex because their is more variety and I think they are better looking (I am a woman and looks matter when it comes to gear!!!)!!!! You need to go to the store, put it on your head, buckle it, and walk around inside the store for about 30 minutes to see if it actually fits and feels good. Putting one on for 1 minutes is not enough time to decide whether it feels right on your head.

I suppose helmets aren't like condoms. You don't really have a choice whether or not to wear one.

You do have a choice but if you wreck, how do you want your face to look afterwards? Do you want to protect your pretty face or not?

Modulars are also heavy. Hmmm...how do I know? Which is exactly why I'm going to buy a new helmet soon.

Really? On ridesmarts website it says "Damage free BSI, DOT or SNELL full-face helmet with face shield."

The SNELL rating is far more stringent than DOT. A Tupperware container with a velcro strap can get a DOT sticker. I would advise getting SNELL rated equipment.

My bad, yes you are correct. However, most all other schools/trackday events require a SNELL rating. Even car schools typically require a SNELL rated lid. And as Nick said, it doesn't take much to get a DOT rating. Think of it this way, those little skull cap things have a DOT rating, would you trust your head/face to that?

You guys make a convincing argument for the Snell stamp. Plus it would make my mother feel better lol. Thoughts on this helmet? It's a Scorpion Exo
