New tires again.

Post by DemonDuck » Mon Apr 29, 2013 6:36 am

Trying to figure out which tires I should go with this time. I think I might even have to replace them before track day. Also thinking about replacing just the rear but I have never done it that way and I dont wanna have any crazy shaking or whatever out of the front. What do yall think. Also I will attach pictures so you can see the rear on the bike and tell me if it will make tech for eurosport track day. If I can make the track day then I think I can get another 1 or 2k miles out of the tires.

Probably shouldn't run that at the track, and depending on how closely they look at tech inspection it might not pass.

You shouldn't have any problems changing just the rear. I do it all the time, and I believe most do. Typically the rear wears out twice as fast as the front. Some will say you shouldn't mix tires but I've never noticed any problems. There might be a slight change in handling but it's so slight I've never noticed and if I did, it was probably more to the fact that I had good rubber again rather than mismatch rubber.

If I change just the rear I will go with a Q2 to match the front.

Based on my couple thousand miles with them:
PP3 are nice sport touring tires but they are not track tires by any stretch.

That intermediate we did the other day would be the maximum I would push them, any more then that they get sketchy.

I ran PP3 on what I would classify as borderline advanced pace and I was sliding a whole bunch. For normal street riding the PP3 will more than get the job done but when you start to put the power down they don't stick, that's not what they are made for.

If your doing just normal street riding/commuting, quick moderate paces then they are good tires, anything more than that, get something stickier.

As for the Q2's I've only ever ran one set bald, they always get too hard toward the end and I pull them off with tread left.

and I ALWAYS change out the front with the rear, I never run a front longer than a rear, I would MUCH rather have a good front and a sketchy rear tire. Now don't get me wrong, I've thrown out plenty of shoes that could have been pushed MUCH further but it's hard to put a price tag on piece of mind.

But that's just me, and I'll be the first to admit I am a paranoid son of a bitch, but I'll bet you $100 you'll never hear me say "I'm not feeling good about my front tire" or "I need to take it easy my front tire is about spent".

I'd rather take a rear bald with belt about to show then ride on a cupped up hard ass front tire.

but that's just me :))

So far arguement sake, lets say you just put on 1000 miles on new shoes and then did a long smokey burnout, toasted your rear tire. Would you replace the front?

Even running track days heavily I usually replaced on a ratio of 2 rear tires per 1 front tire. The only exception to this rule was when I was racing.

I don't do burnouts so the question is null :-)

Ok then, a panic brake and you lock the rear and flat spot it. Or perhaps you get a nail in it. Replacing both tires because one is bad is like replacing all the lights in your house because one burnt out.

I'm going with just the rear for now... Money is tight. I only have about 3k miles on these tires and the front looks good.

As for the pp3 it is the new pilot power 3 taking over for the 2ct. Supposed to be a big improvement. I think it will be the tire I try on my next set.

Sry the PP 3 replaces the PP pure. But it's supposed to be much better than the PP 2CT.

Currious, what is the price of rear only for the Perelli Diablo Rosa Corsa from the place you got the prices listed in your pole?

I always thought that the Power Pure had a very curious market niche: it was meant to target the canyon carvers and track day crowd, but it never really gained a lot of popularity at the track, at least not at the Texas tracks. Most intermediate riders would run (Dunlop) Q2s, and the advanced crowd would run some version of the Power One/Power Cup, if they were opting for Michelin in the first place. Based on their info sheet, the new Pilot Power 3 is a potentially more aggressive tire than the Power Pure was, with slightly fewer grooves in the front. That said, it also looks like there is a smaller percentage of the softer side compound on the rear of the PP3, compared to the Power Pure. I'm sure the compounds themselves are improved, but this may translate into greater longevity.

The key thing they keep talking about is how they put the hard compound all the way across on the rear but put the softer compound on top of that at the edges. They say this gives the tire much better stability and feel. It imporves traction also they say. I am interested to see.
