I did see a pic of a charred lower... definitely need more of the story, though. Can we just call you "Colin?"

When he pulled into the pits, the flames coming off the lower fairing were probably around 15" high. I'm pretty certain that if that bike had been left burning with the lower fairings still attached, it would have been engulfed in flames in a very short period of time!

I've seen bikes on fire at the track before, but I had never seen a rider pulling into the pits with parts of his bike on fire, then getting off calmly and asking for a flathead screwdriver... :-)

I was thinking "Kangaroo BBQ" but that may be a bit racist.

What would you be if you were attached to another object by an incline plane, wrapped helicly around an axis?

I thank Jesus-Tapdancing-Christ mine wasnt that bad Kegan.
Short version, I was coaching a student and smelled burning polyester resin. I recognised it because I once had a mold catch fire in college.
I looked down and saw a small flame where my exhaust pipe was touching the fairing. I figured I could get back to the pits in about 30 seconds so rode back and proceeded to undo the 4 quick release fasteners on the lower fairing. I yanked it off and tossed it aside. But by this time the paramedics pulled up and started hosing down my bike with fire extinguishers. I told them "The bikes not on fire, only the fairing is." They then squirted the fairing and that was that. Overall, minor incident. I have a feeling I'll be hearing about it for a while though...

Brand new paint and sticker kit.
It appears to have had no adverse effect on the bike other than soot lingering in a few crevices.

Probably for the best that you pitted in. If you had just run off the track and removed that fairing, you might have started a grass fire.

Honestly I'm impressed that the only damage was to the belly pan. Do you think you can repair it as is, or are you writing that off as a total loss? I'd also hit up the company that said you didn't need a heat shield on it and see if you can get them to replace it for free, maybe even throw in some cost of paint and such, AND the heat sheilding it apparently didn't need...

You should at least mail it back to them with a note that says "yes you need a heat shield".

This caused me to change the setup on the SV650 ever so slightly. I can't have my track toy burning to the ground. Of course my SV is probably worth as much as your lower fairing.
