"Tandem Garages"

Post by JTChiTown » Thu Apr 30, 2015 10:20 pm

Anyone have/had one of these? It's a 3 car, but looks like a 2 car from the outside. L shaped, so you could stack 2 cars on side. Just put an offer in on a house with that, and if it is a mistake, I'd be nice to know now before I get too comitted.

Darc, isn't yours like that? I can't remember if you have two or three doors

Haha yeah.... the dimensions are 23x35, but obviously not square. I won't be putting any cars but Kelly's suv in the garage anyways.

We actually looked at something like (would be more like a 2.5 car garage). Double door but the extra space to the side (we were thinking room for a car and the bikes). They called it a workshop option but it's not available in our development. I think it's good to have the extra storage/work area. Edit: Not "L" shaped though.

DS has basically a 4 car with 3 doors. It's not a L, but there's an angle between the 2 car door and the 1 car door where you can squeeze another car.

Yeah. Not my ideal setup. We were looking at a house with a 4 car, 940 square foot garage, but couldn't make the deal work. Just curious if anyone had one and could say it works just fine or if it was the worst possible life decision ever.

We're getting a rear-stand with swivel casters to more easily move the bikes around, but yeah, when you own 2 bikes and 2 cars, and only have a 2-car garage, one of the cars has to take one for the team and stay outside.

Cars should stay outside where they belong.

Heck no, I loved being able to park in a garage. Don't have to wash em as often, they aren't blazing hot in the summer or freezing cold in the winter, don't have to get in and out while it's raining, etc. Love it, but, I love bikes more than those creature comforts :SideSplittingLaughter:

I agree with those items. But cars still belong outside. You can garage train them, but they still belong outside.

I prefer all of my vehicles be inside. Out of the weather, especially hail. And they are harder to steal/vandalize.

I'd keep any daily driver of mine outside. Something nice, not so much.

I own one bike, one car, and have a two car garage and the truck still lives outside.

I have not lived with a garage like that but know people who have had something similar. If you're wanting to put 3 cars in it, it will be annoying. Two cars and a work area it'll be great and you'll quickly run out of work shop room. ha!

My garage is 2 and 1 with the 1 angled off so that there is room to put all kinds of extra stuff, and if push comes to shove, it is possible to squeeze 4 cars and 2 bikes into my garage, and still have some room to do stuff at the work bench...I love it. I have a buddy back home that has an even sweeter setup, it has 2, 2 car doors and is long enough you can put two shorter vehicles in one space so he could easily part 6 cars, and with careful planning probably get 8 in there. Not only that, there is a large utility type room off of the garage that is perfect for a work shop. The only downside to his garage is insulation, it's not, and lighting, no natural light.

No this isn't for 3 cars. 1 Equinox and 2 or more motorcycles.

Looking like it's gonna be a winner. I'd love some feedback on how best to setup the shop space. Let yall figure out how to spend my money.

I'd suggest an epoxy coating for the floor. Looks nice and is so much easier to keep clean. Prepping the floor is key though, and kind of a pain, but the actual "painting" is quick and easy. If you have 220, a good sized compressor is always nice to have. :)

I second the epoxy. My first house had it, it's so much easier to keep clean. Chemicals don't go into the concrete, it is much easier to clean, and much easier to work on. I didn't even prep my first garage, and never had an issue with the epoxy coming up or having hot tire transfer. Except that one time I did a burnout in my garage.

Yeah -sure does!

I'm gonna be back over there later this week it looks like for an inspection.... Something my neighbor pointed out I missed originally - the garage is much taller than normal. A swag would put it 6 feet or more. Tall enough for a lift......
