Motocyclist killed when mattress comes loose on I-30

ROCKWALL, Texas -- Police say a man driving a motorcycle was in a fatal accident Thursday afternoon after he struck a mattress that had fallen out of a pickup truck bed on Interstate 30.

Just after 2 p.m. Thursday, officers were called to a major accident in the 800 block of westbound I-30. Upon arrival, officers found the motorcyclist critically injured. He was taken to Presbyterian Hospital of Rockwall, where he was pronounced dead, according to Rockwall police spokesman Sgt. Jeff Welch.

Witnesses told police a mattress had fallen out of the bed of a dark-colored Ford F-150 that was traveling in the center lane. The motorcyclist hit the mattress, which caused him to lose control and hit a light pole on the side of the freeway.

The motorcyclist's identity has not been released.
