This the same guy that was talking about building a Nürburgring replica a few years ago out near Vegas? I'll believe it when I see. I don't see the appeal of a long track though. The appeal of Nürburgring isn't so much the length, it's the over all complexity of it and the fact that it is cut through a forest. A 13+ mile track in the middle of the desert does not sound very interesting to me.

If you never met John, or been to Spring Mountain, I'd be very hesitant to discount his plans. I've been there, and met him, and he is wild. When we were there, he had his Cadillac Ext out on the un-pictured new track at his ranch, testing it. Seeing if the track was ready. Why his ext? Because it could go full out without killing the AC!

Sand isn't as much of an issue as you think. The sand doesn't really blow around much unless the wind is really going nuts. It was a non-issue the two weeks I spent out there.

I think the appeal is the length and complexity. I think the forest is there, but the forest made the track what it is. I don't think anyone goes there for the trees....

Good points there. But desert is flat, the track out there has elevation from the looks of it, that alone makes it more fun :P.

From the web page it looks like their longest current configuration is 6.1 miles though I'm not sure how often they use it. If he is pushing for a 15 mile course then Maybe they use it pretty often. Trying to learn that full 6.1 mile track would be pretty intense, a 15 mile track would be crazy. There is at least one company doing MC track days but they don't use the full track. Just ~2mi segments it seems.

6.1

The track has decent elevation changes. It's hard to see, but it's built in the runoff zone of a mountain. Lots of gullies and rolling hills. Nothing huge, but I'd put it on par with Cresson.

Spring mountain is marked.

Fun side note. We were driving up 156 (upper right) which basically goes straight up 7000 feet. Fun experiment to do in a stick shift. Start at 100 mph in top gear. It's steep enough that 7th gear in the Vette had the power to do it and keep climbing, but when we had plenty of passing power down low, we had the peddles nearly buried to keep it going when we hit the turns near the top.

It's always amazing how much altitude affects performance. One of the reasons I'm never that impressed with electric vehicle times in the Pike Peak race, they don't have the effects of elevation change to deal with, so naturally they are going to have some pretty fast times.

True, I hope they think of this.
