Cracked part

Post by Blinker » Sat Mar 07, 2009 1:02 am

Hey all I’m trying to find out the name of a part that I can't seem to find. I had a "lay down" a month ago and just realized I cracked the ring that is between the triple clamp and the front right fork on an 07 gsxr 750. This is very annoying as low speed right turns my grip touches the fairing :( . I'm trying to find my owner's manual but can't at the moment so if anyone has a name for this part I would be most appreciative.

Try looking at the Ron Ayers microfiche -

http://fiche.ronayers.com/Index.cfm/Mod ... el/GSXR750

Maybe under 'front damper' or 'steering stem'

handlebar or clip on? You said the 'ring'... Is it the circular piece that goes around the fork tube that the handlebar attaches to?

LOL how ironic... I was just heading over here because I was fixing to order the part and I see both clip-on and handlebar assemblies for sale... I've pasted the pic below of the cracked part circled in red. I'll be using this for track days so I want something that it sturdy and the word "clip-on" just don’t scream sturdy to me. Should I just pay the price for a stock replacement part?

Wow, that circle is so tiny, you almost cant see it unless you enlarge the pic! (I actually didnt see it until I enlarged the pic, and looked really closely where it is.)

No need to be afraid of the word clip on, that's just what they are called. It's just the term used for handle bars that are not a solid single piece like found on cruisers, sport tourers and other simulare bikes.

what?!?! circled in "RED" you say?!?! were, I don't see any circle

:-) :-) :-)

my personal thought is, I would buy the stock part unless I was replacing both the left and right ones at the same time (that is just me), aftermarket ones should be just as good and cost less

Like Matt said, clip-ons are what are found on most sport bikes, where the handles have a ring that fits directly around the forks, versus a handlebar that attaches to a clamp on top of the triple tree. GSX650F Handlebar

If you'd like to bring the seating position of your bike a bit more upright, now would be a good time to look into a set of Helibars, since you're going to be replacing one side anyways...

If you go with the Helibars, be aware of the fact that you'll be in the windstream more and less tired when you get home. :D :-o

Good add to most of the bikes we ride and you can ALWAYS get your head below the bars on the track!

less tired or more? I'd think having your head more up in the windstream, constantly fighting it would make you more tired.

With our tiny windshields, you're always in the wind. Just a little more in this case and not so leaned over, so your back, arms and wrists aren't so tired.

Thanks yall for all the helpful posts... it looks like i'm gonna go with the clip-ons instead of the stock or Helibars... i'm a tall fraker so i don't need any help putting myself in the wind.. and should i go down again the replacement handlebar for the clipon is a lot cheaper than the full set... time to order then start getting ready for track days!!!!

So.... got the stock bars off and the new ones angles and positioned right... go to put on the switches and realize there a drilled indent in the stock bars that matches a knob on the switches to ( I assume ) keep them in place.

The clip-on's are brand Driven... question is do you drill (very carefully) on a very smooth round surface or do you just dermal down the knob on the switches. Or C... I got the wrong bars and i need to get ones that actually work with my bike :-o .... I can upload pic's if needed. TIA!!

Only way to drill round section is to use a proper jig in a drill press. Can help with that if needed.
I would first check to see if there is a different part with the holes already drilled.
Suggest that you do not grind off your nubs - things will move on you forever more.

I agree with G-Rex on this one. Your levers should be able to move, but not the switch housings. Check with the manufacturer and see what they say. It's worth a trip down to use George's jigs if you have to drill ... otherwise, you'll be cussing like a long shoreman and still not getting it done. :D

I have seen this on svrider....alot of the guys have been cutting off the nubs and then use a few rounds of duct tape or even a piece of rubber between the housing and the bar to keep the controls from moving.

G-Rex i may have to take you up on that. I'm so kicking myself for not just getting the stock bar that would have run me 30 bucks cheaper and 2 less headaches :) ... if it was a paid for track bike i'd just say to hell with the switches and route the on/off and be done... but alas...TXDOT seems to want you to have blinkers and all that jazz.

Thanks everyone for the advice in this one but looks like with luck she'll be all put back togather again tonight. Thnx Firewa11 for swapping me for your stock bars! This thread can now die a slow and painfull death :)
