straightening rims

Post by 2track » Sun Jun 21, 2009 2:54 pm

I wanted to know if there is anyone who can straighten my front rim? It doesn't effect the seal or ride at all & there is no sign of webbing. I know there are places that do car rims I just cant find anyone who does motorcycle rims. I bought the bike in january & havent found anyone local yet. It looks like whoever had it before may of hit a curb or something.

If the rim is aluminum, no one will touch it.

Better off getting a new wheel. For the price you will pay for a fix, you can most likely find a good used wheel. Check with cyclewerkz and see if they know anyone around with a used wheel that might want to sell.

If it doesn't affect anything, just ride it, unless you're a stickler for the aesthetic details. One of my rear wheels has a slight bend in the rim... doesn't bother me at all. *shrug*

Ill just ride till I get or can find another one. I was just worried as far as taken it to the track. They probably wont let me use it. So the hunt is on.
Thanks for all the feed back.

Not true, SCKego rides the track on his bent rim, and Meat of Snail rides the track on his bent rim.

yea, as long as the wheel is round, true, and the tire holds air, you should be good. you are welcome to see the bend in my front rim, and yes, I ride the track with it. The tire still holds a good seal and the wheel still turns true, so no worries of wobbles or wiggles while riding at high speed. At this point, a new wheel for me would be for my satisfaction of not having any dings/bends, and of course, for having a street wheel and a track wheel.

I beg to differ.

Ask some racers what have had their wheels done. Odds are, he did it. Check his pricing, it is MUCH more wallet friendly than a new rim. Great time to go with a different color as well!

OK - no one should touch an aluminum alloy wheel without extensive equipment and knowledge. Aluminum needs to be annealed so that it can be reformed. It can also be welded under the correct conditions. Aluminum alloys should then be stress relieved and heat treated to regain structural properties. I wouldn't ride on a straightened aluminum wheel unless it is properly heat treated.

That is what I was told. But I figured that there would be someone out there that does it. It really isn't that bad. But I was also told that repairing it may cost more than just buying another one. Used of course. I am in the process of getting my fairings redone ,so I will be repainting the rims with them. I was just trying to get input from youall.

Keep your eye on Ebay, good deals are out there.
The new rear wheel for my SV just arrived - $79 for an 07 GSX-R600 wheel in immaculate condition, with cush drive, sprocket, brake disc and even a tyre.

Thats a steal @ $79!!!

I had to spend $300 to finally get the wheel to do the front swap on mine! Now the plus is, that I also have the front end that it came with so I have spares.
