Valves adjusted

Post by Dr.PorkChop » Fri Apr 16, 2010 9:02 pm

Has anyone done this before. Called cyclewerkz and they charge 250. Which is not bad but I'm poor and looking for a cheaper option.

I read about it once.
Probably should have it done to mine, never has. 36000 miles ~ might be time for that.

I havent gotten mine done yet, but need to. I will be going to CW for it. You probably wont find a shop cheaper.

The one time I asked for an estimate, Fairings on - $780. Fairings off, $680.
On the Triumph site a bunch of people got their valves adjusted, almost all of them that had this done required 0 adjustment. And those that did require adjustment they were slightly out of range..

Guess I better start saving. You can hear them start ticking a bit. Put some Lucus in and I quiet it down a bit.

$250 is pretty good. My bike costs closer to $400. I haven't had it done yet and I have about 24,000 miles on it.

I had my valves adjusted twice at cyclewerkz. Had it done at 7500 and 15000. Needed it both times. (Kawasaki ZZR1200 motor). It was either 250 or 300 for the adjustment.

Don't know what kind of bike you have, but it should have mechanical lifters - you don't need to adjust valves with hydraulic lifters. With mechanical lifters, the valve train usually gets tighter and quieter as they wear - so it should sound like a sewing machine when it is working correctly. A quiet valve train is not good.

Most engines need the valves adjusted early in their life - as the mechanical system is wearing in there is often a fair amount of movement. Then things settle down and usually things are pretty stable. As the engine gets old and worn, then they will need to be adjusted again. If the adjustments are significant later in the life of an engine, it is often the sign of something more serious going on.

And Lucas stuff shouldn't really quiet it down - that is to help hydraulic lifters work better.
