I say old people need to be retested yearly for DL

Post by DemonDuck » Sun Jun 13, 2010 10:28 am

Did you know that an outside company a while back did a reflex test of some elderly people and then did the same test with drunk people. The drunk people had better reflexes. That means that we actually have a WHOLE LOT of people potentialy more dangerous than a Drunk on the road. I was at the DOT and watched as a girl went in and got her moms license renewed.... she actually told the person at the counter that she could look out at the car and see her mom. She told the DOT person that she did not want to make her mom come in because she had a hard time walking and a bunch of other stuff. :HeadScratch: They renewed the license for the lady! omg :-o That is insane ... the woman cant even get into the building to get a renewal but she is fit to drive a freaking car? So I say there should be test after 60 or so. What do yall think?

she could have also renewed the license by mail, and not had her daughter do it.

Yep. I think you go in and get your license, then the next time you can do it by mail (or have someone help). Maybe twice by mail. Not sure. I like to go down there and visit them, get a new picture.

You are right about that but at least that is illegal. This is completely legal BOMBS out there waiting to explode (which they do now and then by going the wrong way on the interstate ect). Dont get me wrong im not saying all old people cant drive im just saying if we know that age affects your stress levels, reflexes, eyesight, memory... and just about everything that affects driving why dont we test to make sure the person is still compitent to drive?

I wonder what the data shows? Are there more accidents for people under 21 or over 65?

I think it wouldn't be an all bad idea for every one to have to retake a driving test, or driving class every 10 or 20 years. There are a lot of drivers out there that could use a refresher class and by doing it for every one the eldery won't feel targeted because it'd just be "The Norm" to have the test.

I'm with Darc, although I think everyone should have to do a refresher every 5 years. New traffic laws are added frequently, so there's nothing wrong with recertifying. Basically like a defensive driving class + driving test, just a 1/2 day class, couple hours for the driving test. Doesn't even need to be a DPS trooper having their time wasted, it could be a driving school or something like that. As long as the cost is reasonable of course.

I think singling people out by age is unfair, that's age descrimination, and I'm all for fairness across the board. I know people that are 80 years old that drive a hell of a lot better than some 30 year olds I know.

I do agree that it should be for all ages everyone however many years as to not single older people out. I was not trying to say all old people are bad drivers or even that young people are good drivers at all. It was just the fact that the studies showed a major loss in reflexes with age.

Yep, I agree with you on the loss of reflexes, but every person is difference. I know people that fall apart a lot sooner than their 80's. But either way I'll take an older person with major loss of reflexes over the 25 year old soccer mom that's texting, drinking coffee, smoking a cigarette, trying to entertain her child in the back seat with a stuffed animal, while trying to get over 5 lanes of traffic to make her exit on time.

And that's the very reason laws like this have never been proposed or passed. The old people are the ones making the laws and doing the voting.

I wouldnt say every year but every 3-5 would be good.... How long is a license good for? Mine is like 5 or 6 years I think but its a CDL.

Or the one I love like this morning when I was moving into the middle lane away from the entrance ramp, and this woman is eating something out of a bowl as she's getting on 820. Spoon in one hand, bowl in the other, and changing lanes w/out looking....I was giving her my 'mean mug' look with my helmet on, but she didn't even notice me anyways, which is my point. She was probably my age, so some people are hazardous drivers no matter what age.

CDLs are 5 years, Class C is 6 years
