Removing The Catalytic Converter

Post by Shocker » Sun Jun 27, 2010 7:47 pm

Hey all, as a lot of you know I moved up to an r1 over Christmas. Being a 2007, it came equipped with a catalytic converter. My issue with it is that it is located right next to my right leg and it puts off an incredible amount of heat. I didn't have any issues with it during the Christmas time fame because it was plenty cool outside. However, now that we are in the summer I cannot stand the level of heat it puts out. There is a heat shield in place however it does not seem to be enough. Often I have to pull my leg away from the bike because it literally burns my leg as I ride (even through my leathers as I experienced today). My solution to this problem is to eliminate the cat by cutting it off and installing a straight pipe in place of the cat. Hopefully this will drastically reduce the heat coming off my bike, and also help it to run cooler. My only concern is that this will affect my back pressure.

Will it affect my back pressure enough to be harmful to my valves?
If so, should I have it dyno tuned? Where should I have it dyno tuned? How much does it cost?
Would a power commander be able to resolve the issue?

Thanks for the help

I don't know how it will affect back pressure, or if you would need it tuned. CycleWerkz normally does Dyno tuning for about $250.

Or you could put a heat shield in place.

just get an electric blanket, rip it appart and take the asbestose lining out and wrap it around your leg. At least that's what he did in the movie. ha!

Seriously, give the guys a Cycle Werkz a shout. They'll tell you what you need or don't need.

I don't have the cat anymore. PCV and autotune adjust it just fine.

Good News! I just called cyclewerkz and they said that simply eliminating the cat would not harm the bike at all in terms of back pressure. Thanks for the advice all =)

Worst case scenario, install a power commander and insert the map for whatever exhaust you have.

I am tempted to gut my cat as well. Just have not made the decision yet, and I do not have the heating issue like yours. I hope it works for you.
