Got bike back...adding a GPS...

Post by NickS » Wed Oct 19, 2011 12:38 pm

I got my Z1000 back and also a Zumo GPS. The Zumo comes with a power cable that apparently ties straight into the battery, any tips regarding the installation of this?

I did get the Zumo 550, can I share routes with the other Zumo users in the group?

Thanks,

Nick

A lot of GPS's use the generic gps format, I forget the file type off the top of my head, should be able to swap between some GPS's using a generic format.

Maybe create a database of cool rides and load them in a sticky on the rider leader thread or something?

When I installed the Zumo cradle on my Versys, I did a fuse block at the same time and just wired up to that. It let me set it up so that it would kill power when the bike is off, so the GPS couldn't drain my battery if I forgot to shut it off.

Also, moved this to the hardware forum.

Heck with it, I just hardwired it to the battery. Curious about your fuse block rhino, was it like this? http://store.valueaccessories.net/acces ... block.aspx" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

What are you using for ground on your devices in this case?

It's one of these: http://www.fuzeblocks.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Hot and ground both go to the fuse block, the fuse block is grounded to the bike frame. There's another wire that goes from the fuse block to a light on the bike so it knows when the bike is on.

Caution....installing a fuse block may lead to a desire to install a bunch of crap on bike.....before you know it you are running down the rode with neon mood lighting!!!!!!

Which one, the one I linked? I love it. Once it was in place it's stupid simple to add new stuff.

My only gripe about it is that the positive leads are on one side and the negative on the other. I would have liked it a little better if the leads were in pairs right next to each other, so you don't have to split pairs of wires to route around the box. It's a minor thing though, just messes up the wire feng shui under the seat. :D

Yeah, the one you posted looks perfect for my needs. I am researching now to find what would be an accessible trigger wire for the relay. One nice thing about the C14 is that it has 3 accessory power points in stock form. The Z has none. IMO, a fuse block should be OEM nowadays.

It comes with a vampire clip, I hooked mine to I think the license plate light. If you mount it under your seat, you should have your tail light and license plate light wires available near there. I found mine by just unhooking things while the bike was on and seeing what shut off.

Yep, I know where that wire is, when I did the fender eliminator I had to unhook it. Good call. Next stop, heated gear.

Zumo 660.

As for heated gear, you might want to look up what sort of accessory draw your Z supports. My Versys doesn't actually allow that much. I've got a GPS and heated grips, and I can't turn the heated grips up past halfway without them shutting off. They've got their own protection I think, so they know when they can't actually draw as much power as they want and they kick off rather than risking the electrics of the bike.

I'm not sure what your Z will do, but you might want to check and compare that against what the heated gear you want expects to draw. It seems a little complicated to me matching all that stuff up, but it's worth it to not be disappointed when you hook stuff up and it doesn't work right.
