Ugh charging system dead.

Post by toy752 » Sun Sep 09, 2012 8:41 pm

Need some help my charging system doesn't work any longer. Was a block away from the house when the battery finally went all the way down. I have no clue what to do now.

When you throw a charged batter in it and crank it up, then give it some RPM, what kind of volts are you getting.

Sounds like a regulator rectifier problem(the part i have on order now lol). It could even be the stator(like mine). Easy fix no worries. Lets narrow down the problem and go from there

Start with the simple stuff. Take the battery out and have it testing. Autozone or Pepboys should be able to do that for you. It's possibly you might just have a bad battery.

Definitely don't take the Miles approach and start ripping out everything and ordering parts. It will get expensive quick.

90% of electrical problems are simple, like a bad battery. The other 10% suck and are expensive to fix. Nowadays my first response to anything charging-system-related is to just replace the battery and see if it goes away. If the new battery gets drained, then I look for the real issue.

TX eats batteries, period. It gets too hot here, batteries live about 5 years tops then just won't hold a charge right anymore. That goes for bikes and cars.

I didn't just start ordering parts lol. Knowing that it was probably the stator/regulator i took the tank off and found the wire connection that had fried. Then i took off the stator cover and saw that some of the coils were dark. Common problem amoung triumphs. Easy peasy, i've already got the new regulator on and now i'm waiting on the stator to come in.

I gotcha! I was going to borrow a torque wrench from fixxer, but i figured it was a better idea just to go buy my own :)

If you have a voltmeter you can test most everything out yourself.

Except the battery. You can't tell the health of a battery with just a volt meter.

Bummer, although that don't rule out the battery as the problem, it's probably not the problem. :(

Next step would be fixxers suggestion. Take a measurement of the voltage at the battery while the bike is running. It should be around 14V or so if the charging system is working.

It really doesn't matter how old the battery is. Get it tested (fully charged!) anyway before just assuming that its not the source of the problem.

Once you have verified that the battery is okay, use a test light to see how far the voltage is traveling within the starter circuit (you can use the bike's wiring diagram to identify the various components). Test the most accessible parts first.

Well the battery fully charged 12.55v start the bike and the volts go down to 11.89v. Rev the bike to 4000 and the volts go up to 11.98.

Could be the stator or the rec/rect. I would lean to the rec/rect but either way I would think it is a warranty item.... but then I forgot not many bikes come with more than a year so nevermind.

I will be testing the regulator also. Kind of confused on how to test it but will keep doing research.

Usually if the regulator has gone bad you can physically see it melted wires etc.
