If you turn VOX off for the Intercom, how do you talk? Do you have to push a button before talking?

OK, I read the manual. :-D

I also disabled the VOX for the intercom. Looks like you just have to tap the Jog Dial button to start/stop an intercom conversation. That I can deal with.

Rapping the jog button open and closes the channel, turn vox off and just leave the channel open during the ride, then just talk when you have something to say, no need to push buttons

If VOX was on, yes. With VOX off you have to push the button. At least according to the manual.
9.2 Enabling/Disabling Voice Activated Intercom

Factory Default Disable
Enable Tap the Phone Button
Disable Tap the Jog Dial

If this feature is enabled, you can initiate an intercom conversation
with the last connected intercom friend by speaking any word loudly
enough. The most effortless way to trigger intercom VOX is to blow
into the microphone as if blowing dust off the microphone. If you
start an intercom conversation by VOX, the intercom terminates
automatically when you and your intercom friend remain silent for 20
seconds. However, if you manually start an intercom conversation by
tapping the Jog Dial, you have to terminate the intercom conversation
manually.

However, even when this feature is enabled, if you terminate intercom
conversation manually with the Jog Dial, you are not able to start
intercom by voice temporarily. In this case, you have to tap the Jog
Voice Prompt “VOX intercom” Dial to restart the intercom. This is to prevent repeated unintentional
intercom connections by strong wind noise. If you tap the Jog Dial to
start an intercom conversation, it is not terminated by 20 seconds of
silence. After turning SMH10 off and on, you can start intercom by
voice again.

Got it. That should work, as long as there isn't a lot of wind noise from someone. We used to have that problem a lot with the Collett's, but the VOX was adjustable on those.

What about someone who talks too damn much? Screw wind noise!

Mic position with the coverings did a wonderful job on the g4's

And I could hear miles just fine at 85mph even without the plastic thingy

OK. Got it. What a bitch.

It is hooked up to the helmet and works pretty good. Well, just calling my home phone. I do have one problem, though. After I connect to the phone, and then shut off the Sena, I can not hear anything on the phone. Bluetooth shows on, but disconnected, but the speaker and mic do not work. Kind of like it thinks it is still connected to the Bluetooth device. Anyone run into that before?

I've never seen that using iPhone, SII and SIII with my G4, I haven't hooked my SIII up to my sena yet

Mine works fine when I shut it off. I even called my parents today going down the road using voice activation. Punks didn't answer but it is so simple to use!

Looks like it might be an issue with my ROM. Others are having the same issue. Looks like I can disconnect from the phone and everything works fine, but if I shut off the Sena first I have problems.

So it sounds like, when you do the 3 or 4 way connection all mics are hot all the time???

If VOX is disabled, and the channel is open, then yes. It's like two way radios in full duplex with both people holding the buttons down, you just talk, like a confernece call.

From what Jim posted I got the impression that the VOX is used to open the channel. The 3/4 way connection thing is an open channel between the 3/4 units, so I don't see the VOX being able to be used for that. Or is it possible to have th 3/4 way conference call connection thing, and also use the VOX to only transmit when you talk loud enough?

If the VOX can only be used to connect a channel, it's no wonder people have complaints about it. Not only would the VOX need to detect you're talking, the system then has to make a connection, and then starts transmitting, that's a pretty good delay when all you are trying to say is "COW!!!".

From what I could tell on my G4 vox is best used for jumping between crap, like music and talking.

There is a reason why it's off from factory, just leave it off.

VOX is Voice Operated eXchange, it, by definition, is an on/off switch. In the w-2ay radio world it turns on the transmission in place of the push to talk. It sounds to me like Sena is using it as a true VOX in that it activates the exchange with the paired comm. However once the connection is made the mic is active all the time. The 3/4 way connection thing is an all the time connection, so am I correct in assuming, even if the VOX option is turned on, the mics are still hot all the time on all four units?

Also this raises a question, how does the units behave when you go out of range and come back in? Do comms start back up, or do you have to make the connection again.

These are all just questions about function. I really don't care, just curious how exactly it all works.

When VOX is on there is a delay for it to get the channel open and for it to transmit voice, that's the common Sena complaint and the problem I saw with the scala as well. The channel will close after a while with no sound, then re open again with sound vs just staying open.

Ever since I had problems with it I turned the crap off and I've never looked back. You can't do bluetooth music and com's on the G4 at the same time, so the VOX function allowed you to go back and forth, I could listen but then start talking and it would kick over to comm channel and after a bit of inactivity it would go back to the channel with my MP3's.

When we did a quick test miles went out of range, when he came back in rage we just started talking again.

and on that test the range was extremely good. Also when you do go out of range it will beep and keep beeping until you come back into range(which is an instant connection). If you don't want to reconnect you just press the toggle button and it will stop trying.
