Moderate ride - Sunday, August 24

Post by dufremle » Thu Aug 21, 2014 8:03 pm

I'm going to lead short ride down to MSR Cresson Sunday morning. I need to talk to Roger about my suspension. I also want to see Thomas and Jon race. This will just be a short ride down, nothing spectacular. We will leave Sonic at 9 am. Get there early if you want food.

Date: Saturday, August 24, 9 AM
Place: Sonic on Clifford and White Settlement
Time: Kick Stands Up 9:00 AM sharp. Get there early if you want food/coffee.
Level: Moderate

It's my B-day and I'll be relaxing by the pool. Next time for sure.

Dude, it's your BIRTHDAY. Relax by the TRACK. We can stop by Wal-Mart and pick-up a pool. Put you right down by the fence. The best of both worlds! :-D

Thanks for putting it together Jim. Learned some new tricks watching Roger.

How's the front feel now? Any better?

I didn't get a chance to hit any twisties on the way home to test it out, but it definitely feels stiffer. I pulled the front wheel and took it over to Rick's to check the balance and it was almost perfect. Now I need to look elsewhere for the cause of the shimmy.

Sounds like a good day. Had every intention of coming to track after church, then had an unexpected memorial service to attend at 1:00 which pretty much shot what was left of the day.

Under acceleration or all the time?

A common cause is the steering stem bearing getting worn, or the steering stem nut being a little loose. Basically anything that lets the whole front end move relative to the frame in any way except twisting to steer.

Also how old are your tires? A weird wear pattern can make the front end shimmy.

It only does it when I let go of the handlebars and my speed is between 50 & 60 mph. I was hoping it was the front tire out of balance, but that isn't it. It didn't start doing this until after I put the forks back on. Roger looked at everything an couldn't see anything that I may have done wrong.

Check your steering stem for a loose nut or loose bearings. That's something Roger wouldn't have checked (you can't even check for it with the front wheel in a chock) and can definitely cause the issue. I've had bikes do that.

The front wheel is still off the bike and the bike is on fork stands. Would I have to use something like a Pit Bull stand to check it? I have one, by the way.
