Well, my '06 TDI Golf gets 42MPG and I'm usually not that nice to it. Only real maintenance has been oil changes every 10K (recommended by factory), headlight/tail light bulbs changed, changed the timing belt at 105K, and changed the manual tranny fluid at 105K.
