Needing Riding leathers

Post by Fish R1 » Thu Jul 05, 2012 8:58 am

I am currently looking for leathers. New, used, borrowed or rental. If I go new I will have to wait until August. My present task is getting my truck legal so I can either haul or trailer my bike and gear to track days. I am going to TWS this Sunday to corner work for Lone Star Track Days. I will have 2.5 credits of track time with them after this weekend. I am also trying to get things done by next Sunday for a track day at ECR. They have an open day for bikes scheduled on their calendar and it is only $120.00 for the day.

There are a few post on this...but i would just rent the first time. WIth ridesmart the first time is free!!! A good place to check out leathers is motoliberity in dallas, just ask to see their race room and tell them your budget. Like many others i went with cheap leathers which have worked out for me well, but i wish i would have rented for a bit until could could have bought some quality leathers.

Moto Liberty usually has used leathers in stock, which would probably be the best value for you. Make sure that both quality and fit are good, and bite whatever bullet the price represents to ensure that you get both. If you plan on doing track days regularly, then you may want to consider getting a one-piece. If you plan on using the top and/or bottom of those leathers on the street as well, then a two-piece may be the better choice for you.

It sounds like your first track day is going to be a Lone Star one, which does not usually provide rental leathers. Ridesmart does, but then you won't be able to use any of your credits. By the way, open track days are great for working on your skills. However, they are a terrible choice for your first track day, since the amount of instruction provided is minimal. Those days are really designed more for experienced track riders. Right now, Ridesmart may be your best choice for your first one, especially since they include the instruction in the cost of the track day, which Lone Star does not.

It sounds like I should consider scheduling ridesmart on July 28.
With a possible 15 percent discount and the use of leathers and boots.
Plus the close location of MSRC.

If you know your size you can usually find used leathers on ebay or craigslist. Just make sure you know your size!!! and keep in mind that there are cheap suits with name brands on them!!!

I haven't done a trackday with lonestar, but i'd agree with striple...ridesmart is really the best way to go for someone who has never been on the track. They are very friendly and have always put my worries to rest. They work with everyone and in the morning they do a "track drive" which lets you ride in a truck while they explain how and why you should hit the corner. Not only that, but they have the round robin, which lets everyone follow the instructor to get things movin nicely

And the X's. Don't forget the value of those when you're new to the track.

Yes, except I would opt for the 1.7 on July 29th for my first time at the track. The 1.7 CCW flows nicely, and is easy to learn. The 3.1 is going to be a long track to memorize for your first time, and you're going to get fewer laps to work on each turn.

The 3.1 is long, and does take a bit longer to learn if you've never been on either section, but don't let that stop you if you really want to. :) Any trackday is a fun trackday and that's what it's all about. Having fun.

I think family commitments on July 29th are going to direct me to the July 28th track day. I am still looking into it.
