Strut Replacement Honda

Post by Polokid69 » Wed Jan 29, 2014 11:15 am

I need to know if anyone would be willing/interested to replace my struts(4) on my Honda Del Sol. I can get the struts for about $200 but the cheapest place(Pepboys) wants $1286 to replace all 4(parts+labor). I have never replaced shocks/struts on any vehicle in my entire life so this is out of my realm of expertise. I'm willing to pay someone and assist to some extent so let me know if you can help.

the car is a 1997 Honda Del Sol

Are you buying the complete strut (fully assembled) or just the replacement shock? That sounds cheap for a complete strut. Replacing the innerds requires special equipment.

Here's a video of what you need to do if you aren't replacing the entire strut...

I would suggest buy the loaded strut assembly, it may be a bit more money but cost less in labor. Like the first video shows replacing the whole unit as one is real easy. You even get to use a hammer.

I know nothing about struts but they are supposed to be whole unit. $43.99 each for front(x2) and $35 each for rear

For cheap loaded struts, they run about 100 buck or so, just for one. that might be out of your price range.

Make sure they include the springs. At that price I doubt they do.

are we talking the coilover springs because I'm just replacing struts, not springs too ? Like I said, I know very little about car suspension. Back when I worked on cars in the 70's, you had shocks, just plain old shocks and I've never replaced any. I was told by the previous owner to buy struts so I bought struts, thats all.

Then you will need to buy/rent a spring compressor so you can remove the old springs from the original struts and put them on the new struts. Or take it somewhere and let them install it. Call Striple's guy and see what he charges to do it. That's probably your best bet.

Yeah, you'll have to compress the springs and swap them. I've got a spring tool (somewhere), if you want to borrow it.

Yep, no springs. I did a search of O'reilly's and Auto Zone. Neither sells the springs, which surprises me.
