Windows 10 upgrade

Post by dufremle » Thu Jul 28, 2016 6:09 am

I'm trying to upgrade my home desktop to Windows 10, from 7 Home Premium. It does the install and stops at 99%and just sits there. Rebooting the machine means I have to do the install again. I've also noticed that I can't run Windows update. It's says it's searching for updates but never finishes.

I reinstalled 7 last night (repair), then tried to upgrade to 10 and had the same result as above. Anything I can try to get it to upgrade?

Jim doesn't want to spend the money on anything SO he wants to get Windows 10 for free before they start charging. LOL!!

Well you don't have to just upgrade, I'm about 99% sure you get a "key" or a flag on your "Microsoft" account when you upgrade. Once that happens, you should be able to just download ISO, install from scratch and when you login it'll activate.

Tomorrow is the last day to upgrade for free. I doubt I will be able to do anything by then as tonight I have a work dinner to attend. I'm going to have to look at logs to see what might be happening. I didn't intend to wait until the last minute to upgrade but I kept putting it off. Oh well.

Well, after installing 179 updates last night, this evening I kicked off the upgrade again and it worked. Yay!

Now I get to spend hours setting everything up the way I like it. Fun.

If you haven't upgraded yet but still want to there is a work around.

It's been upgraded. Now I'm working on getting everything set up and working. My printer won't print from this computer, so I need to figure that out, etc.

Apparently along with a big privacy policy update. They say it will improve transparency. I think that means their corporate advertising partners get more transparency into windows users.
