Charging system
I put a volt meter on the battery today and it doesn't look like it is charging. I'm guessing the stator went bad. Any way to tell if it's the rectifier?

There should be three wires running from the stator, through a connector, to the R/R. Disconnect the connector and check the continuity of the three leads on the stator side. They should all have continuity to one another (<1 ohm resistance), and they should NOT have continuity to ground. If they pass this test, it's probably your R/R, if they do not pass this test, your stator is burnt out.

Let me know if I did this right. I checked the 3 wires (all yellow) by touching each of them together with the ohm meter. Each went to 0. Then I touched each terminal to the frame (and negative side of the battery, just to be sure), they each dropped to 0. Does that mean the stator is shot?

Yup. The stator should not be shorting to ground; that means that all that voltage that it's producing is just grounding out instead of charging your battery. Time for a new stator. I replaced mine back in January; not too big a job if you've got basic tools and a shop manual to go-by. Also have some new oil standing by since you have to crack open the case and drain the oil to access the stator.Dufremle wrote:Let me know if I did this right. NOTE: My manual said to remove the tank and throttle bodies to be able to thread the wire from one side of the bike to the other. This is not necessary. If your bike is set-up like mine, with the stator on the LH side and the connector on the RH side, just tape a wire to the connector end when you pull it out, and leave the wire hanging out both sides of the bike. To thread the new stator wire through, tape the connector to your wire and pull it back across. A long screwdriver and flashlight are helpful for getting it through the tight bits.

Thanks.
It looks like removal is easy. Remove the alternator cover, unbolt the stator from the alternator cover. Bolt in the new stator. Replace the alternator cover, with sealant. Oil does leak out. The stator and rectifier are about 3 inches rom each other. So real easy to get to.
I will call CycleWerkz tomorrow to see what they recommend. I will also have the battery tested.

Hope they will cover it under warranty. Even if the dealer says 'no', you can talk to the district/regional rep for Honda. The shop can give you the contact numbers.
If it's the factory's fault, you should be able to convince them to fix it.
