New Mexico Slashes Concealed Carry Reciprocity Agreements!
Recently, the New Mexico Department of Public Safety announced an end to recognition of CHLs from, and reciprocity agreements with, a large number of states -- including Texas and other states, many that neighbor with New Mexico.
This stems from a new and different interpretation by NM DPS of that state's reciprocity law, which requires other states' concealed carry statutes to be as stringent as, or substantially similar to, New Mexico law.
We will monitor further action on situation and report back to you with any new information. In the meantime, we suggest you contact the New Mexico Department of Public Safety's Concealed Carry Unit if you have any travel plans to that state in the immediate future. Those living on the Texas-New Mexico border, be particularly cautious. Click the link below for more the New Mexico Department of Public Safety page containing the logic and a listing of the states involved. Read them all and share with yoru out of state friends.

A lot of states don't officially recongize out of state permits.

I'd think that would violate the full faith and credit clause, regardless of the similarities of the laws. It'll be interesting to see how this plays out.

The full faith and credit clause hasn't traditionally been applied to gun rights. Unless I'm mistaken, reciprocity has always been voluntary. As recently as last year, the House was considering a bill that would require states to respect one another's concealed-carry permits, but I'm not sure what ever came of it. I'm assuming that it didn't pass, based on the information above.

Update on Yesterday: "New Mexico Slashes Concealed Carry Reciprocity Agreements!"
Yesterday, May 1st, Slashed was a very good word.
Yesterday morning if you clicked on the link below you'd find that the New Mexico Department of Public Safety announced their state would no longer accept concealed handgun licenees from a large list of states including Texas:
New Mexico DPS Reciprocity Agreements with Update
If you clicked on the link above yesterday morning, the alert was clear and correct.. Many TSRA members did just that and acted immediately to contact New Mexico.
Those who clicked on the link above late yesterday afternoon or today found a much different message than the one described in the alert and wondered at the hoop-la.
Thanks goes to the thousands of concealed handgun licensees from around the country who acted quickly, specifically licensees in states effected by the change, folks who wrote or called the New Mexico DPS and the Governor of New Mexico, It was their comments that brought about the change you see to the DPS site today. Action has been temporarily postponed and for now your license is "good".
No, TSRA has not joined those among us who sensationalize issues. Not hardly!
The postponement came due to both public out-cry and the hard work of the NRA lobbyist for New Mexico, who by the way, also represents Texas.
