Credit card fraud and gas station skimmers?

Post by SputnikSam » Thu Mar 02, 2017 10:34 pm

My chase fraud alert has gone off with unauthorized transactions two or three times in the past 3-4 months. Chase has sent me new cards everytime, but I can't seem to get a feeling that maybe some of these obscure gas stations I stop at during my motorcycle rides have credit card skimmers in them? Or the store clerks are scamming?

Last time my card was supposedly used in Denver City, TX at a Thriftway Foods. Apparently they tried to buy gift cards.

I'm wondering if I should start using cash instead when I go out riding? I guess it's just a matter of chance, since we fill up more often on our bikes... I don't know, I don't leave my wallet or cards anywhere and I work from home. Wondering if any of you have similar experiences, or if I'm just a statistic.

I get mine stolen frequently, I have a special account setup now that "once it's out, it's out" so if they grab my stuff they can't drain my account. I've had mine nabbed at restaurants several times.

I had my number used a moth ago or something like that and had to get a new card. Was caught pretty quickly and I wasn't out anything. But this is one of the reasons I use credit cards and not debit cards.

I've only had it happen once or twice in the last 10 years or so. And I have used my credit card at some very sketchy gas stations and restaurants. I never use a debit card.

Same here, been bit a couple of times but always a credit card and never had to pay for anything. Have had it happen a few times the last few years, but I think it's actually been Melissa that was bit.

Well that sucks, but at least I'm not the only one. I've never had to pay for any of these transactions either, so that's good. Just a bit of a hassle to change the numbers every time. Thanks for the replies guys!

I have had my card scammed also but I have never had it coincide with our fwmr rides. It sure is a PITA when you have to change cards ect... and its upsetting to me that "people" choose to scam others rather than get a real job! Good issue to talk about and be aware of Sam.

At gas station pumps, I use my credit card as credit and never put my pin in. I have never had mine stolen from any gas station.

I have mine stolen about once a year. Mine is Chase and they seem to catch it before I do. The transactions never use the PIN which is probably how they catch them. I always enter my PIN, but always cover the keypad even when no one is around. There could be a camera mounted somewhere.
