Possible ride today

Post by Bird Shooter » Thu Nov 30, 2006 12:40 pm

I'm thinking of hosting a ride today. The weather looks quite fun. I just installed the chains on my tires, they are the new Michelin Power Chains with great grip.
Anyone game?

Hell yeah, I've got some Metzler M-9 snow tires, so I'm totally game! I just need some nut warmers

heh.

Looks like MacArthur at 114 is iced good, all 3 south lanes are blocked... and off in the distance it looks like 161 is stopped going north with all sorts of flashing lights. I swear, the sand trucks are managed by insurance claims adjusters (needing overtime)... Not only that, but I really do think it should be required that people learn how to handle their vehicle in skids... It's amazing how people don't understand the concept of "steer in the direction of the skid".

My commute is gonna SUCK!

It amazes me that the idiot Highway department thinks sand is going to do any good. IT DOESN'T!!! The only way sand is of any help is if the temp is near freezing AND the sun is shining. The sand absorbs heat from the sun and then melts the ice. They need to foget the damn sand and use salt.

I also agree with Firewa11. I think part of the driving test should be to slide around in a parking lot. They've got coatings they can put on asfault so that when it's wet it's slick as ice. Every one taking the test should have to drive on it. I know I learned more about how to drive in my HS parking lot in the snow then I ever did any place else. And it saved me on more then a few occasions.

Every vehicle I've ever owned was out on the first ice that showed up to figure out how it handled in a skid. My Avy has so many computer controlled systems that I had to turn them all off last year to get any fun out of it!

Rode the Beemer on ice once ... no way in HELL am I taking the Bird out to find out what it's like kissing my own ass as I spin around.

I think the news stations are confusing the hell out of people telling them to 'turn into the skid' ... everyone I've asked and knows what to do (those that didn't know what to do were ALL female and will be turning the wrong direction! :-o ) agrees that the wording is ALL WRONG.

Firewall's wording 'steer in the direction of the skid' makes much more sense. Bottom line is that you have 1/10 second to do the right thing or it's round and round you go until some unmovable object stops the spinning. :(

Those of you that haven't grown up in the country (or visited your local parking lot when it's icy), go out this evening, find a deserted parking lot and learn what it feels like and how to control it.

FYI: to spin a front wheel drive car, accelerate into a sharp turn and chop the throttle SUDDENLY. No brake required ... that sucker will spin around you so fast you'll be laughing before it's over!!

HEY, I'LL SELL IT WHEN I PUT THE ADD OUT! I know most of you can't appreciate a classy, comfortable ride that still can carve the canyons, but there are some that will. Anyone here put in 500 miles a day and get off without walking funny?

Yep, little over 900 actually, twice in a long weekend.

I didn't see any snow, only a couple hours of sleeting rain, and some dumb drivers. It happens about once ever 3-4 years though (but then again, I'll probably be disagreed with, so I'll add a disclaimer. I havent lived here for the last 10 years)

We get snow, usually once or twice a year. Here's proof, from February 14, 2004:
