radar detectors

Post by vagrant » Mon Apr 21, 2008 7:40 pm

okay,

I know some of you peeps have them/experience with them so let me know what units are good, bang-for-buck, motorcycle oriented.

(mrs vagrant is looking for a bday present...)

Also, there once was a thread about wiring up an accessories hook-up. I would be interested in a how-to or some such thing.

Cheers,

spend over $300. You really get what you pay for in a radar detector. Ive been using a passport x50 for a while with good luck. I do wish i had the arrows like a v1 but it looks like the v1 might be slipping a little as they haven't updated in a while
No it aint my birthday, but I got my name on the cake.

For the auxiliary hookup, get a fusebox from casporttouring.com or your favorite two-wheeled retailer. You can mount it under the seat, or up inside the front fairing, basically wherever you want all your wires to be going. I drilled two holes in the inner fairing and ziptied it there, so when I want to mess with the connections I just pull the LH fairing off and it's right there. It will have two major leads to connect to the +/- terminals of the battery, and a thin sensor wire that you just tap into any wire that's live when the bike is running (I did mine to the tail light wire). The fuse box will only supply power from the battery when the sensor wire is live... this is a good thing, as you don't want to switch off your bike but forget to turn off the radar detector, and then come back a few hours later and find the battery is dead. Once you get it hooked up, all you have to do whenever you want to install a new accessory is connect it to the fuse box.

I'll agree with angry...escort radar dectors is the best on the market hands down...only other one I have ever considered is the K-40 brand for it's customizable concealment...

there's a guy up here with a passport 8500 x50 for sale for $200. Seriously considering it. The only problem is the "laser beams"

Take it for a spin in your car to make sure it's working. If it is, SNAG it at that price! I spent close to $500 for mine and swear by it. I've been running the same detector on the Bird and now on the Bitch ... it's saved my butt MANY times.

I just wired mine to the fuse box under the seat with an inline fuse holder to protect the detector. You probably need to get her AND you a HARD system from Legal Speeding. Otherwise, I can't hear mine go off and really can't see the screen where it's mounted on the Bitch.
