Top Speed!
Top Speed!
So does anyone know any place around here to legally and SAFELY perform a top speed run on a bike. I'm dying to see what my bike will do but I am not stupid enough to try it on an interstate. I'm looking for a safe and legal alternative. I'm not talking 1/4 mile. Thanks!

Re: Top Speed!
Ray,
I know you said "legal" and this isn't "legal". But, on several occassions some friends and I have gone up to the Indian Bridge north of St. Jo and run across that a couple of times. The bridge is very lightly travelled, it's very long, very wide, and has a very smooth surface. The Indian Bridge is the first bridge on the Red River west of I-35. It's about 20-30 miles up-stream.
The method we use is to approach from the Texas side and ride across slowly to make sure there aren't any police on the other side. Since the legal division between Texas and Oklahoma is the line of vegitation on the south side of the Red River, the bridge itself is technically in Oklahoma. However, the bridge is so long because it covers a bunch of floodplain on the south side of the river. Once we have determined that things are clear, we take off in intervals and max 'em out. I've seen the speedometer on my Bandit read 163 mph. I would expect your 'busa to do better than that.
If you can borrow a Garmin, you can stick it in your pocket and read maximum speed once you get to the other side. You don't even need to mount it on the bike. With it stuck in your pocket, you're less likely to try to look at it when you should be concentrating on other things anyway.
It's kind of wild; you twist the throttle as far as it can go and eventually, the speedo stops climbing. You pull your knees in a bit tighter and it climbs a tad more. You pull your elbows in and it climbs a little more. Before you know it, you are wrapped as tightly as you can be down on the gastank, and it's screaming for all it's worth. The bike gets rock-solid stable (as long as it's not a windy day). Once you reach maximum velocity, you start slowing down. Eventually, you figure you can sit up. You look down and you're still going 120. The adrenaline will keep you wired for the rest of the day.

Re: Top Speed!
Yup, Texas Mile is the only legal place you can do top-speed runs in Texas. There's also the Big Bend Open Road Race, but that's more of an average speed challenge, and I think it's cars only. Indian Bridge is the place to go if you want to stay local... note, while passing people stopped on the bridge, check your speedo before sticking your hand out to wave. You might think you've slowed down a bunch, but sticking your hand out while still doing 120 can lead to a surprise...

LOTS of Busa's on the 200mph list, ZX14, ZX12's a couple GSXR1000, okay....I can see all those making the list, but one Can-Am Spyder?? Really? I wouldnt have expected a Spyder to make the list. I wonder if G-Rex could make the list

Re: Top Speed!
Only down side to the Texas Mile, it's a standing mile, meaning you start at 0 and have a mile to see how fast you can get up to. You can hit some seriously high speeds but I doubt you'd actually be able to top it out.

Accessibility tends to be a problem, though. As is dodging the other oversize vehicles that are often found on it.KC817 wrote:There's this place, between Irving and Euless - BIG - WIDE lanes about 3 to 4 miles long each.

The 'fun route' goes north from Decatur, along 730, 455, and 677: Map... We've done rides up this direction several times, lots of fun roads up there. The fast way to get there is probably I-35 all the way into Oklahoma, then west on OK-32.

There is a great turn in the road up near Illinois Bend. You come around a corner and the valley just opens up before you and for a second, you don't believe you are in Texas.

Re: Top Speed!
Ok, I have been to both the Texas Mile, and the Indian Bridge. The Texas Mile is by far the best way to go, but you have to ride down there and what not. The Indian Bridge is closer, but the roads to get there are not the best around. Yes they look great on a map, but there was a lot of loose gravel on them for some reason, and I ended with a hole in the radiator from a rock that came off my friend's bike.
That said. You got the same bike I got. Unless you have modified the bike (more than pipes, and filters) your bike will not go over 186. It is factory set at that speed. Even if your speedo shows something else, if you use a GPS you will see that it tops at 186. Now, with a stage 1 turbo, or PC and engine internals modded, you could hit the 200 mark.
A lot of people think that hitting 200 is cake, but is not. There is a lot into play for that to happen. Even at the Texas miles, where the record was set by a busa, there were still plenty others that never were able to hit 200mph.
If you do take it some place, and top the bike, let me know, I'm curious what yours can do.
Good luck.

"The road to a true, verified 200 mph on a Hayabusa can be calculated in thousands of dollars per mile-per-hour."
That said, I don't think anybody mentioned anything about expecting to hit 200...

Re: Top Speed!
Well, there was mentioned a list of 200 mph bikes, and yes there are a bunch, but I was just making sure that Ray did not go all the way there with those hopes, because it might not happen to him.
The bottom line is, OEM Busa, tops at 186. I believe that was what was in question here. Now drop some cash and the thing is a beast.

Hahahahaaa, well you know, 186 is the regulation from OEM to make the government regulation happy, so the beast is locked in a cage, now after you free the beast from it's restrains the thing turns into a wild animal that most people will be scare to ride.
So yeah, 186 is not bad, but the stupid thing has so much potential that it makes you wonder what were they thinking when they decided to build such animal.

I'll tell you exactly what they were thinking: "What!??! There's no way we can have a freakin' HONDA being the fastest bike in the world! That's it, pull out all the stops, bore out the engine some more... aerodynamics get top priority, I don't care that it looks like a cyclops with an allergic reaction! Just make it faster then the HONDA!!!"CrazyKuban wrote:So yeah, 186 is not bad, but the stupid thing has so much potential that it makes you wonder what were they thinking when they decided to build such animal.

HAHAHAAAA, Hey to me it looks better than the Blackbird. Not only that, but the technology is way more advanced than the Blackbird as well.
Blizz..... The feeling of having that much power under you is close to the reaction of extacy. Is a combination of fear, respect, and the willingness to accept that anything you can do still not enough to control such beast. It really becomes a mind game, that you hope to win every time if you plan not to get kill by it.
The moment you loose the respect for the beast, she will take your head off. I know people that got to that point and found themselves close to God in a few seconds, but thankfully survived to ride the animal another day.

I have done Pipes, Power Commander, TRE, Velocity Stacks, K&N Filter, and air box mod. The TRE removes the 186 mph restriction.CrazyKuban wrote:Unless you have modified the bike (more than pipes, and filters) your bike will not go over 186.

You guys are silly. I've been 178 GPS-indicated. I don't really need the extra 22 mph of wind and buffeting you'd get at 200.
