Track Prep.

Post by U-Turn » Wed Oct 20, 2010 11:50 am

I need to work on my bike and need some resources to make that happen.
I don't have a garage. I have a covered parking space and it's frowned upon to work on vehicles in the parking lot.
Change brake pads (me) - Flush the systems (me) - clean the calipers (me).
It would be nice to have someone help me bleed the systems. Don't have $$ for one of those gadgets so I can bleed them alone. Anyone have a gadget to bleed the brakes I can borrow? I'll risk the frowning.
Estimate: 4hrs.

Fork seals are a little leaky. I need to get the stuff to do it with. I have a shop manual and it is an older bike so there are hands-on references on the net from others that have done this.
And a location.
Estimate: 8 ~ 12 hrs.

Any volunteers to help with either project?

I've got a cheap bleed bottle/tubes you could borrow.

I have a one way valve for bleeding brakes. Hit me up if you want to borrow it.

I'm a little late, but advice always helps. Post up when you plan on doing it, i'm sure some people will come help out. You have a good days work ahead of you for all that, but none of it is too difficult.

Words of advice: Only buy OEM or Leakproof fork seals/wipers, with a preference towards OEM. Some of that junk you see on the net for a bargain (parts unlimited brands) is just that! Don't ask me how I know... Also, a vacuum bleeder makes the job great and harbor freight has one for like $15-$20 if you can swing it. It works just the same as mity-vac and simplifies life. Be sure to have some floss on hand too to clean the caliper pistons, unless you plan on doing a complete rebuild on the calipers (which I'd recommend). You'll likely need a fork seal driver as well.

EDIT: I have a 43mm seal driver and harbor freight vacuum bleeder if you'd like to use them.
